  1. Hair Loss: Re: Flakes/Dandruff Persisting Post Lice Treatment?

Are those flakes stuck to the shaft so that you have to pull them off? If so, they're lice nits, and you need to treat with ivermectin.

If you can just flick them off with your finger, they're...

    Bonding: Re: Craigslist Adoption Terrified

Just a reminder, the baby has to weigh at least 340 grams to be treated with ivermectin. I believe kitten Revolution can be used before then.

General: Re: In need of help!

You can purchase a card and use it for online shopping.

And since you're new to guinea pigs, here's some recommended reading:...

Hay: Re: A review on GuineaDad Nourish Timothy Hay.

But that's still misleading. What you've got is short "stems," not short strands. Each of those short stems is made of a bunch of long strands of hay -- the stems have just been cut.

    You can't...

    Vegetables: Re: Living lettuce

Probably. But if it's a green leaf lettuce, I'm sure it's o.k. Romaine is the only one I know that may potentially cause problems in some guinea pigs.

    Bonding: Re: Craigslist Adoption Terrified

All I can tell you is, it can take MUCH longer than an hour for some pigs to settle down in a neutral area. I once kept a trio in a neutral area for 11 hours before I thought it was safe to put them...

Hay: Re: A review on GuineaDad Nourish Timothy Hay.

This looks like a good place to point out that the length of the stalks of hay have nothing to do with the recommendation for feeding long strand grass hay. The long strands are the fibers inside...

    Bonding: Re: Craigslist Adoption Terrified

Separate them. If you've just gotten her, it's too soon to introduce her to another pig. She needs time to calm down and get used to a new home, and to figure out that you're not trying to kill...
  9. Re: My 2 years old guinea pig is probably pregnant!

If you haven't separated the male, do so immediately. Sows can get pregnant immediately after giving birth. Back-to-back pregnancies are very hard on sows and the second litter of pups, and the...

    Cage: Re: Upgrading Cages

Look at the Cages forum on here for all sorts of information about building your own. And this is an election year, so there should be free coroplast everywhere.

    Sneezing: Re: Simon's Medical Thread.

If you can make do for a few days, I have one I'll sell you very cheap. I only used it about dozen times before my last pig died, and it hasn't been touched since.

I have no idea how long it...

    Sneezing: Re: Simon's Medical Thread.

He may need a combo, like Doxycycline and Baytril. Or they may need to be pulsed -- first one, then the other, then back to the first again.

Nebulization may help. It's very hard to get rid of...
  13. In Heat: Re: Is this normal, white discharge on genitals?

It's not weird. It's perfectly normal. She's plenty capable of discouraging him if she wants to, and she may not want to.

    Sneezing: Re: Simon's Medical Thread.

I had one that we had to nebulize with gentamycin and a steroid to get cleared up.

It's as much the particular antibiotic the pig is on as it is how long. If the AB isn't effective against that...
  15. In Heat: Re: Is this normal, white discharge on genitals?

    Boar glue.
  16. In Heat: Re: Is this normal, white discharge on genitals?

Is it stuck to her fur? Did it come off when you gave her a bath?

It may be boar glue if it's really stuck to the fur.
  17. In Heat: Re: Is this normal, white discharge on genitals?

Sows have a mucus plug that blocks the opening to the reproductive system. They lose it when they're coming into heat, and then it re-forms after the heat cycle.

Ditto Soecara. Trios of boars are almost guaranteed to fail. We never recommend that anyone try that.
  19. Genitals: Re: Need help sexing my ~3 month old guinea pig rescue

If you're not sure, keep him/her separated until you're sure. If there are testicles, they'll grow pretty quickly.
  20. Genitals: Re: Need help sexing my ~3 month old guinea pig rescue

Looks male to me. But see http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm and compare the pictures there.

The finger just above the genital in the bottom picture is where you'd put your index finger to rub...
  21. Behavior: Re: Piggie's Chewing Each Other's Hair and Hurting Each Other

You've got a barber pig causing Freya's hair loss.

The V-shaped hair loss is classic for mites. You need to treat all of them for mites, and that may also take care of the barbering problem.

Bathing: Re: Shampoo for my guinea pig

The Wahl Oatmeal Shampoo for cats should be OK.

Behavior: Re: Prego piggy about to pop!

    Vegetables: Re: Bell peppers specifically

If you dice them small enough on the pellets, she can't help but eat some of them. For size, think about a pencil eraser cut into 12-15 pieces. Tiny pieces. She'll get enough to get used to them.
