  1. Vet: Re: Searching for vet in the Berkshires, MA

I don't see an exotic vet in Pittsfield. But if you google "exotic vets pittsfield ma" without the quotes, you'll get some hits just a little farther afield.

Do find an exotic vet. "Small animal...
  2. Vet: Re: Sensitive Ears but Vet Rules no Infection/Parasite

If you've got one pig with mites, they should all be treated. But you can treat yourself. See the link in post #2 above.

    That's a LOT of hair!

And I think Scooter would heartily approve. Maybe he even picked Simon out for you!
  5. Fighting: Re: Piggies that have been together for a year are fighting

A 2x4 really isn't large enough for two boars. Is it possible to expand the cage?
  6. Vet: Re: Sensitive Ears but Vet Rules no Infection/Parasite

Umm, the vet doesn't know that you can't see mites? There are one or two kinds that can be seen, but most are invisible because they burrow into the skin. In fairness to the vet, ear mites are one...
  7. Vet: Re: Sensitive Ears but Vet Rules no Infection/Parasite

The baby isn't quarantined if she's in the same room and only 5 feet away. They may not exchange anything that requires direct contact, but they could certainly give each other an airborne illness....

Sexing: Re: Confirm sex of guinea pig?

    Compare him to http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm.

If he's male, you'll be able to feel the bone in the penis by pushing your finger across his abdomen, right at his genitalia. If you press...

Introductions: Re: Introducing dad, mom, and baby girl

It's not unusual as a dominance thing. When pigs have been separated for a while, there'll definitely be a dominance struggle. Cookie can probably put a stop to it when she gets tired of it.
  11. Vet: Re: Sensitive Ears but Vet Rules no Infection/Parasite

I'd treat her for mites. https://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/threads/111160-How-to-treat-for-mites-and-lice. And I'd put cold pressed coconut oil on the crusty places.

    It's extremely unlikely...

Behavior: Re: Eating too fast and what to do about it?

The only other thing I can think of is that she may just be really hungry. Does she always have hay in the cage?
  13. Introductions: Re: Introducing Guinea Pigs In A Small House?

    The bible on introductions: http://www.guinealynx.info/introductions.html.

Most pigs prefer a buddy, and you won't know until you try.

Just as an FYI, you won't be "bonding" them. You'll be...

Nutrition: Re: Corn husk and low calcium diet

They're fine to feed, fresh or dried, if you strip the outer husks off to get rid of the pesticides.

Behavior: Re: Eating too fast and what to do about it?

Are you talking about vegetables? If so, what size chunks do you cut them in? I think they're much more likely to eat too fast with small bits than with big chunks.

If you decide to put marbles...

    Skin Problems: Re: Sansa’s Infections

I'd assume that it's a fungal infection and get some Lotrimin and apply twice daily to all spots with a q-tip. You can do this for a few days, and if the spots don't get any larger and you begin to...
  17. Won't Eat Veggies: Re: Can piggies be healthy if they DON'T eat greens?

Slow down. A lot. Create a partial shelter at the end of her cage with a towel over it, put her food and hay under the shelter and the water just outside. Give her time to settle in and eat her...

Bigger cage. Aren't you the one we told a few weeks ago that the babies would get their ears gnawed off if the cage was too crowded?

Introductions: Re: Introducing dad, mom, and baby girl

It sounds very doable. Six weeks is plenty long enough time for him to be sterile. Just introduce them as if they'd never seen each other.

Here's the new link for the bible on introductions:...
  21. Diarrhea: Re: Constant soft poops. Smellier than I remembered. Are x-rays useful?

Start with a smaller piece of something other than green leaf lettuce -- red leaf lettuce, or Bibb, and see if that makes a difference. Also stop the vitamin C tablets. That shouldn't be enough to...

  23. Diarrhea: Re: Guinea pig has diarrhea, cannot call vet until tomorrow because of Memorial Day

Full-out liquid diarrhea, or just mushy poops? If really diarrhea, that's much more serious, and I'd stop the Baytril until I could talk to the vet.

They shouldn't have corn. It has far too much...
  24. Diarrhea: Re: Constant soft poops. Smellier than I remembered. Are x-rays useful?

    Sorry she's having problems.

I don't know that an x-ray would help. It would show gas, or opaque material, but be useless for diagnosing an infection.

Smelly poop is an indication of two...
  25. Feet: Re: Hind Leg Paralysis, Sudden Onset , 18-Month Old Female

The other reason not to put vitamin C in the water is that vitamin C degrades very quickly in the presence of water and light, and pretty soon all you've got is funny-tasting water.

    If you're...
