Cage: Re: 2x4 or 3x4 for arthritis guinea pig?

We do recommend the store associated with this site. Profits from that store are what keep this free site running for all of us, and they've got very good quality products.

I'm so sorry you lost him. But what a great name for a guinea pig!

Cage: Re: 2x4 or 3x4 for arthritis guinea pig?

A 2x4 is plenty large for an elderly, arthritic guinea pig. After she's gone, if you decide to get more pigs and need a larger cage, you can always extend it.

Vet Costs: Re: Guinea pig Check up cost

Call the vets and ask. Vet prices vary widely across any country and even in the same city.

Hooting that occurs after eating and that stops completely is likely to be food partially blocking the...

Injury: Re: My guinea pig is limping, what to do?

If you have some extra grids (or can get some), use zip ties to create a smaller area in the cage so that her movement is restricted and the other pig can't bother her. Don't put her in a new cage,...
  6. Skin Problems: Re: Is this Ringworm? (Hair loss + Crusty skin above one eye)

It's not ringworm -- that causes an actual ring. But it does look like a fungus, and ringworm is a fungus, so it's so nearly the same it might as well be.

    There are no over-the-counter treatments...
  7. Upper Levels: Re: Ideas/advice for building a large custom loft

There are tons of loft pictures in the photo galleries, built out of every conceivable material. You'll no doubt find some ideas there.
  8. Rumblestrutting: Re: Guinea pig rumblestrutting, chasing and barbering other pig.

Well, I never would have separated them. You've got a barber pig, and she may always be one. As long as the other one isn't being bitten, she's not being hurt.

That being said, those are pretty...

Upper Levels: Re: Loft/Built in house

I think you'll find pictures of those in the photo galleries. The main thing is to make sure there's no place for their feet to get caught jumping up or down.
  10. Fighting: Re: Extended cage and guinea pigs are fighting like mad!

For some reason, changes to a cage can set off pig squabbles. As long as they're not actually fighting, I wouldn't worry about it.

But if each loft only has one ramp, one pig can trap another in...

    Re: Snowball's medical thread

She needs a vet, and prescription medicine.
  12. Bonding: Re: Bonding adult female and young female, maybe getting along but not sure?

I think they're fine. You might try putting a teeny tiny drop of vanilla on both noses and tails -- that way they'll both smell alike and it may confuse them into getting along a little better. But...

    Re: Snowball's medical thread

What symptoms does she have that make you think she's in pain?
  14. Bonding: Re: Bonding adult female and young female, maybe getting along but not sure?

Don't put more than two hideys in, and orient them in different directions so they can't see the other pig when they're in one of the hideys.

Where in Mississippi do you live?
  15. Bonding: Re: Bonding adult female and young female, maybe getting along but not sure?

It all sounds very normal to me. However, you need two ramps to that loft so that one pig can't trap the other one up there. You can block it off until you get another ramp made.

Bonding: Re: Dogs and guinea pigs?

Don't get them used to each other. Just let them interact through the cage bars, unless he's large enough to tip the cage over or is scaring her.

Most dogs are not safe with guinea pigs, and if...
  17. Nutrition: Re: Not eating pellets, concern about protein in a baby

Maybe not. Does she eat hay? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about the pellets. She may develop a taste for them as she gets older.

Allergies: Re: Possible Timothy hay allergy.

You can also rinse the hay to get rid of the dust. BUT if you do, you'll need to leave in the cage only a few hours and then completely remove it, because it molds very quickly. But it could work...

Upper Levels: Re: Will guinea pigs use upper level?

It's actually not good for them to jump off a ramp. Their backs are pretty fragile.

But you can put sides on the ramp, and a fence on the loft, and that will stop the jumping.

Upper Levels: Re: Will guinea pigs use upper level?

It may take time, but they'll use it. Especially if you put some food up there.

Lethargy: Re: Sort of lethargic guinea pig?

Please do NOT use the Sherwood pellets. Their information is based on junk science, and the high calcium content of their pellets is apt to make things worse.

But bleeding from the urinary tract...

Congested: Re: Breathing sounds like croaks

I'd take him to a vet. Raspy breathing is never a good sign, but gasping for air is really concerning. He might just have something stuck in his throat, but the vet should be able to listen to his...

Cage: Re: Question about making an L-shaped cage

It has nothing to do with the connectors.

You'd be connecting the "opening" of the extension to the side of your existing cage. If that opening isn't the exact size of the number of grids you...
