I finally got my ever so lonely 4 month year old, male guinea pig a pal. I just got two little male baby guinea pigs (the petshop person said that they were about 3 weeks old) and we are currently going through the quarantine period, I am soo excited, I can't wait to introduce one of them to my current piggy. I am only keeping one of them, the one with black patches (named Ziggy) because my mother has totally fallen in love with the little baby with brown patches (mom named him Pocket). So my mom is going to take Pocket back home (which is about 4 hours drive away from me, I'm still going through uni in a different state). But anyways, it is cool how I have managed to convince her about the joys of guinea piggies. My mom says that she 'tolerates' animals. I guess she has finally given in =) three cheers for guinea piggies!:cheerful:

Are you sure they're both males? Petstores miss-sex animals all the time.

yeap, i checked at the petshop before getting them. I am pretty sure that they are male. I read up from a book and from the Internet on how to check =) Thank you for your concern anyways.

They are adorable - but..

I have tried to tell myself to not judge. Honestly. But why did you go to a petshop to get these 2? You posted this a few days ago:

nope... guilty as charged, petshop guinea pig... wanted to look for a breeder or any association here in Malaysia, but well, could not find anything...sigh... i personally don't really like petstores nowadays, they really don't take care of their pets very well =( there was this one shop i went to and they dumped like 15 guinea piggies in one small cage and they all had big lice problems, with scabs too! =( poor lil darlings, i was soo freaking angry... i bought wiggy from another petshop which took care of their guinea pigs much better.. i guess it really depends on the petshop owners and their conscience..

And I guess I can't help but wonder why you wouldn't have adopted after being around this forum for a bit and reading up since you first introduced yourself. I know that everyone has a right to do what they want - and spend their money how they want. I just would have thought that you would have chosen differently. *sigh*

p.s. I edited this post and took out the quarantine comments - I see that they are quarantined.

Hi, thanks for the reply, and no its okay for you to judge me because i did not explain myself totally =( there isnt any breeders here in Malaysia or any guinea pig adoption programs (i would be jumping for joy if there were), guinea pigs are not as popular here and the only way for me to find guinea pigs would be from pet shops, the pet shop i was referring to above, i did not buy the babies from that particular shop. I went to another petshop, it was a better place, where they actually take care of their guinea pigs. I still can't help but feel guilty of course buying from a Petshop but i really could not find any other way to obtain guinea pigs =( i am sorry if i have dissapointed you. I hope my explanation sounds more like solid reasoning than excuses to you. I just really wanted my wiggy to have a friend and not be lonely. Sorry again =( i undoubtly feel extra guilty now. I just wish there were more avenues to get/adopt guinea pigs here in Malaysia.

I am now more concerned over the little guy who will be separated and alone. Is your mom going to get a friend for it?

Yeah JD I agree. Those two are adorable together and look quite bonded. I would send them both home with mom to spend their life together--since pigs are social animals and need to be at least in pairs.... And find another pig friend for your pig.

I am not sure what to say about the pet store purchase, since I have no idea what the GP situation is in Malaysia. :-/

I have a friend in Spain that spent many months trying to find a pig in a pet shop even with no luck, he finally ended up having to import pigs from another country! I know it is hard to believe but it is very true, several of us tried and tried to help Edwardo find pigs to no avail! I tend to agree, if they are bonded which they appear to be, I would either keep both or send both with your mom. Young pigs that are very bonded can become depressed and anorexic at the point of seperation, and the 4 hour drive could prove disasterous in this case. Good luck!

Please dont seperate these guys. They are already bonded. Either give them both to your mom or get her another pair (hopefully from the rescue in the above place).

I, too originally had wondered why the 2 that were gotten together would be separated - they do look so close - but my comments on that were deleted when I edited my original post. [yeah...oops on me!]

As for the rest, I don't really know the Malaysia situation with shops and or rescues, so I suppose I shouldn't have said anything.

Isn't this the guy who was looking specifically for Skinny Pigs to breed? He imported skinny pigs. That is not a very good comparison.

The babies are just precious, but they should NOT be split up. I do not want to sound harsh, but it would be much better for both piggies to stay together, as they are already bonded. They really NEED to stay together. I'm sure your mom can find a rescue pig to adopt if she has her heart set on a guinea pig-but please, please make sure she understands the time, care, and money that is involved in guinea pig ownership. One should not have a guinea pig solely because they think it is cute.

I doubt you will find anyone on this forum that supports your decision of getting them from a pet store, as many people do it worldwide every day, but please, in the future, exhaust every resource for finding rescue piggies before resorting to a pet store.

I just have to say this once more-those boys should NOT be separated! Please keep them together!

Good luck with the piggers. :)
