Since we have to keep our boys apart, I wanted to ask your opinions on building "up", since we don't have room to go "out".

I was thinking of taking their divided 2x4 and making a 1x4 divided upper level. Each would have technically a split 2x3.

However, I would love to make another divided 2x4 level on top (minus a grid for steps/ramps to the lower level) to give even more room. Question is, how the heck do you clean the bottom level without taking apart the whole top level every time?

Any hints?

I have a 2x4 double level. I used zip ties to connect the whole thing. On the front bottom four grids I zip tied everything except along the two very outside edges so the 4 grids will swing upward (zipties work as a hinge). Then I slide the coroplast tray out to clean it. I use binder clips to hold the edges of the cage shut. I believe it was Weaver that I got this idea from, trying to give credit since it was not my idea.
Hope that helps.

It is hard for me to visualize what you are describing because I'm not a spacially smart person so this may not work for you.... But I take my cage apart down the middle. Rather than taking the top off I split it in two lengthwise then I lift both parts completely off and stash them out of the way. It can be a little tricky because the grids are fragile in places but this seems to work well for me because you have the whole bottom unobstructed and ready for cleaning.

How is the ventilation on a multi-level? I would think the ammonia vapors from the urine might get trapped in the bottom level, no?

It shouldn't in a C&C since the grids provide a lot of ventilation. Right now each are in a 2x2 right? Even if you build up, that's not technically a 2x3 because upper levels don't count towards square footage. If you build another 2x4 on top of the current 2x4 you could house one pig in each level. That way they will have the proper amount of room they need and not be cramped.

I love multi leveled cages! I have a 4 leveled 2x5 cage and the 5th level is a 1x2. I made two big doors that allow me to clean the cage out easily. Here are the two pictures of the doors:

The doors are all held together by cable ties, I then just use bulldog clips or any clip that I can find to keep the door closed.

Thanks, Ly.

Why doesn't building up count toward square footage?

In a double 2x4, how do we keep them from getting lonely? They love sitting next to each other in the current situation!

Exercise and exploration space are very important for their long-term health and happiness. Cavies need enough room to do "full-tilt laps." Upper levels should not be counted in providing the minimum square footage. In fact, ramps used to provide access to the upper deck usually take away from downstairs exercise space and count against square footage.

Thanks. Any ideas for keeping each other company with a two-level 2x4?

I'm not sure if I can explain this right or not. But on the top 2x4, section off 1 grid space and lead a ramp from the bottom level up. Then the pig on the bottom can venture upstairs to a 1x1 space and visit through the grids. The pig on the top will still have an almost 2x4 space to live in. That's the only way I can think of that would allow them to visit.

That is a GREAT idea! Thanks!
