Thought i would introduce myself, My name is Lysette.
Ive got 3 boy pigs. One is the dad (Jaffa) and the other two are his sons (snickers and Licorice). they all live together.
My question is does anyone have any piggies that live outside all the time? My boys always live outside, apart from when the weather gets real bad, then they come in.
Thanks Lysette:)

Hiya Lysette, and welcome to the forums!

As this site is all about C&C cages, very few of us have pigs living outside as C&C cages are not suitable for outdoor use.

Be sure to post pictures of Jaffa, Snickers and Licorice - they have really sweet names!

Welcome to CavyCages! CCC's right - there are some folks who might have outdoor hutches, but most of us have our pigs inside year-round. I wouldn't see my furry children much if they were outside 'cuz I'm a couch potato. Since they're inside, we can watch tv together!

Oh yes, we looove pictures!

Welcome to the forums. I would like for you to read over the following links. The first two are posting rules for this forum and the third is to help get you started with your new piggies. They are some must read links.

Piggies should be housed indoors. They are susceptible to heat and to cold. They can get heatstroke and other heat related illnesses from high temperatures. The ideal temperature range for pigs is between 65F-75F. Being outside also poses a risk of predators trying to break into the cages. If they are in a temperature controlled shed then that would be better than just being outside exposed to all the elements. Also when you keep your piggies indoors, you can catch illnesses much faster than when they are kept outside. When pigs get sick, they can go downhill rather quickly.

Mine live indoors in my bedroom, but they spend a fair amount of time outside especially during March - October since the weather is nice. In the winter, they stay indoors 24/7

My 9 piggies are in my bedroom. Sometimes I take them outside for some grass and fresh air but mostly love to have them in my room to help with homework. The weather changes too fast here to keep them outside and we have cats, possums, raccoons, foxes and hawks to worry about.

Ive had piggies all my life and they have always lived outside. they are quite safe as New Zealand (where i live) has no predators that would harm them. Plus wild piggies live outside 24/7.

Yes, but are the pigs we have wild? I think not. Do wild pigs eat hay, pellets and romaine lettuce :)

So, no one in the area where you live owns dogs or cats? All of the snakes New Zealand is famous for are mysteriously missing from your area?

As Piglet said, domesticated Guinea Pigs are not wild Guinea Pigs. They don't look the same, act the same, eat the same and New Zealand definatly isn't their "natural habitat" like South America is.

Wild Guinea Pigs are lucky if their life span is a year old. I guess if all you are shooting for is to have your animals live for a year or 2 then you are right; outside is an appropriate place to live.

Keeping animals outside is treating them and viewing them as livestock not pets.

Let me add, that I'm not completely anti - keeping your pigs outside! I was just stating that your justification does have a flaw.

we have no snakes in NZ and the cage is dog and cat proof as well as our back yard.
but i guess there is a possibility of them having a shortened life

I'd be sad if my pigs lived outdoors... I love looking at them while they play.
Being that I'm in Washington where it rains most of the time, keeping them outside isn't an option for me.. but I do like to let them accompany me on the patio once in a while when it isn't too chilly.

Are your pigs wild or domesticated?

I don't know much about having them outside, since I never had them in that situation... but I agree with Ly about potential predators and such.

Welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy your stay :)

We'd like to see some pics of your boys :D

Even if there are no snakes in your area, there is always the possibility of a predator of some sort, and there is honestly no cage that is completely cat and dog proof. Lids and stronger walls may deter them, but an agressive animal can and will find a way to knock a cage over to get prey.

Wild piggies also have a MUCH shorter lifespan.

No, actually we probably wouldn't give up about this. You asked a question, and we were giving you the answers for what was in the best interest for the health and welfare of your guinea pigs. Obviously, we can't force you to do what we've suggested, but it's a fact that your cavies will live longer and happier if you house them inside.

I did a search to satisfy my own curiosity and there are no land snakes in NZ, but there are a couple varieties of sea snakes. But they are still at risk if there are cats and dogs around. We just had one member who's dog went into her house and tore apart a c&c and killed the pigs. So even though you may believe they are 100% safe, they may not be. Like I said earlier, if you want to keep them in a temperature controlled shed then that's ok, but leaving them totally outdoors exposed to all the elements is a very bad idea.

You asked a question and are getting honest answers, yet you are refusing to listen to the truth. If you don't like what you are hearing, fine, then leave the forum, I don't care. But in the end, your pigs will be the ones to suffer.

But Fishie, if you are going to stay, please read the posting rules and use proper capitalization and punctuation. This is a warning to do so. https://guineapigcages.com/forum/announcement.php?f=27&announcementid=7
