I have one male guinea pig age 1. I took him out of his cage this morning to clean it and put him on the floor with some newspaper. I noticed a bit of diarrhea on the newspaper and a bit smeared on his leg and his butt. There was a lot of poop in the cage from overnight that was normal - not diarrhea. (I'd cleaned it yesterday evening so all the poop was from overnight.) He's laying around now but that is what he usually does in the morning/early afternoon so I can't say his behavior is off. Anyway, I have noticed that his anus (I guess it's his anus -- circle where the poop comes out) is kind of weird and has almost a growth in it and coming out of it. It almost seems like a small penis but I am sure his penis wouldn't come out of his anus. His butt area (for lack of the correct term) also hangs really low and I always though that was his testicles bc it's almost like two sacs but I know that can't be right. I will try to get a photo of this but right now he's sleeping. Any advice for the diarrhea and also is it normal to have some extra skin around the anal opening?? By the way, he's had this extra skin since we got him two months ago and has never had a problem pooping so it's not impacting him. Sorry I am probably not providing enough info and I'm clearly ignorant. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I'd get him to a vet asap. It sounds like a rectal prolapse where the intestine is protruding out. The vet might be able to ease it back in. I've read about it happening but have never had a guinea pig with it.

OK I just watched the anal sac cleaning video and now I realize that the extra skin IS his penis after all (oh my god, this really is too funny that I'm getting so well versed in guinea pig genetalia). Anyway, I still appreciate advice about the diarrhea. He was just eating some hay so that is a good sign. He hasn't pooped in a while (1-2 hours) and that is a long time for him. Maybe I'll try that anal sac cleaning later and see if there is an obstruction (I don't really think so bc he did have the mushy poops earlier today). Need to go buy mineral oil now. Thanks.

I second what @pinky said. Diarrhea is not normal in guinea pigs, get him to a vet asap. Remember to get an exotic vet, not a cat/dog/sometimes sees small animals vet, they don't know much about guinea pigs even if they say they do. You need a specialist. Best wishes for the little guy! :(

Oh and yes the two sacs are his testicles. lol They are usually pretty big if unaltered.

A prolapsed rectum does not result in an obstruction. The intestines protrude as they poop. The intestine are fragile so I wouldn't attempt to clean the anal sac with a Q-tip if there is a possibility of a prolapse. I'd have a vet check if it's a possibility.

Thanks for all the responses. I think he is actually fine. He just had a normal poop. My husband gave him a big strawberry last night, I think that was too much for him. He is busy eating hay. I really don't think he has a prolapse, I think it's just his anatomy and the extra skin is really his penis which I didn't realize was so close to his anus. Anyway this whole thing was helpful bc now I have the name of a good exotics vet in my area if I ever need it!
