My boar's Grease gland is clogged (plastered in oil and grime), because I have never taken the time to clean it. I have researched how to clean it, yet no one really gives helpful advice. Please help. I would like, if possible, if some different methods are shared.

One thing you can do is rub it well with cold pressed coconut oil (available from pharmacies or grocery stores) and let it sit for an hour or so. Rub the oil in well into it and around it. Then soap it up with either exotic pet shampoo, or a drop of Dawn dish soap. Note -- the Dawn is ONLY for the grease gland, not for his whole body. Rinse well.

If it's really gunked up, you may have to repeat this process in another day or so.

Boys just get so dirty don't they? I feel like female pigs are aware of dirt and stay cleaner.

Not all male guinea pigs get gunky grease glands, and some females do.

My theory is that males are more concerned with dominance and territorial, so they produce more oil from their grease gland. I've noticed that males in my rescue sometimes can get pretty gunky (all those smells and sounds and sights of other pigs!) but when adopted and in their own homes they settle down. I've also noticed males that are more territorial seem to get more gunky. Just my own observations--does anyone else have any ideas?

Sometimes when I rub in the coconut oil, I don't wash it out.

I would agree with foggycreekcavy . I have a trio of 3 males and a bros home (two boys) and the bros don't really do anything territorial anymore. I've seen it once or twice, and I've noticed their glands are cleaner than the trios, who are a little bit territorial. It may just be because of the baby boy in there.

Sorry to necro the old thread but I went to Walmart and they had a 'Organic Virgin Coconut Oil' in a jar, looked like liquid. I couldnt tell because it was all wrapped up lol. Is that what I'm looking for or is it a specific Cold Pressed? Or does cold pressed just mean you apply it straight..

Cold Pressed refers to how the oil is extracted from the coconut. Organic, cold pressed oil will be purer and higher quality. Coconut oil is liquid above 76 degrees, solid at lower temperatures. Its a very healthy oil, and great for many uses. Sorry, but my pigs are girls...I know much more about coconut oil than about boy pigs. :)

So we (Huggles and I) should just look for cold pressed coconut oil for our boars?

I bought mine off Amazon. It looks like this:

Inside is a solid, but it melts into an oil fairly quickly if you rub it between your fingers, or into your pig's grease gland.
Hope that helps!

Ack! That's what was at Walmart! If I may ask, what did you pay for it. And do you still have the link for it?

I've tried cleaning mine as well, and never seem to get far on getting him clean. Luckily I keep Coconut oil on hand (Great Moisturizer!!) so I will definitely rub on a blob tomorrow and give him a spa treatment. Poor dudes hate their baths. But sorry guys you're gross :)

Lol good luck! Elliott just sits there. I was rubbing at his for a while the other day (it was totally gunked up), he didn't seem to care a bit; but after dealing with his abscess for a few weeks I think he's gotten used to being handled, poked, and prodded on a regular basis.
Poe, on the other hand...forget about it.
