There is a petsmart near were i live about 12 miles or so away. I went there today to get some litter and treats for my guinea pig.You have to walk by the guinea pigs to get to the supplies and I saw about 6 or 7 pigs in about a 27' by 22' aquariams:mad: . They where almost all super skinny with one pigloo in one cage and they could hardly move and they only had one tiny food dish and water bottle. it was so sad but all of the other petstores are over priced so i pretty much have 2 shop there. all the other animals are doin' well but the poor pigs are basically being abused!!!! :weepy:

Yes. Write to the Corporate HQ for Petsmart. Tell them the exact circumstances and the store address where it occurred and why it is a problem.

Document conditions. Complain to the manager and corporate. Go to their website (broken link removed) and look under customer service.

That is sad. I would place a phone call to corporate as well! Maybe it might change something. I have found, from working in a corporate office of a huge retail chain, that they will probibly follow-up on the complaint, but much might not get done. It all depends on how over worked the corporate office is. I would call them. Calling is much more affective then a letter.

I wrote to the Corporate office from the main website and was sent an e-mail response asking me for the store location and what the problem was exactly. Now they may not have stopped selling pets but they did take them out of the fishtanks they were in, they did begin to keep them seperated by sex, they did begin to give them hay and bigger cages and lastly they did put pigloos in they cage so they were not just sitting in the open all day. It may not be perfect but at least it is some improvement and hopefully you can get the same results.

Being related to this subject, I thought I would post it here. There is a new petstore in my area and I don't like the way they have their guinea pigs housed. I told them about it, but the one guy doesn't want to do anything about it. He is actually the owner. The other two family members that work there was willing to change things.

Who should I contact regarding the store?

If it is a local mom and pop store, those are usually worse than the chain ones. Not much you can do. At least you can complain to corporate with the chains.

Try complaining to the Better Business Bureau or AC or the SPCA if you have one.

You should talk to the Pet Care Manager of that Petsmart. I work at Petsmart here and they are in blatent violation of the policies set forth by corporate. Granted these policies still don't provide for the ideal space and long term living conditions of the animals, at least they offer some guidelines to maintain standards of comfort and cleanliness.

The one thing in the post that strikes me as very odd is the comment about separating by sex however. Petsmart stores are only allowed to order a single gender of animals (Male at my store, for example)

The conditions you describe violate a whole slew of those standards, btw, so if documented someone should be able to be held accountable. Pet Care Mgr, Store Mgr, District Services Mgr, just keep after them.

What they order and what gets sent could be two totally different things. Unfortunately, they may not have thought to (cared to) check sexes or even know how to check them when the animals come in.
The PetSmart near my house clearly has animals marked male or female, and I've never seen only one gender.
