NOTE: IF YOUR PIGS ARE EIGHT WEEKS OR UNDER, MUCH OF THE FOLLOWING MAY NOT APPLY.

When it comes to food, your going to need to feed three things- pellets, hay, and vegetables.

Pellets: You will need to provide 1/8 a cup of Oxbow or KAYTEE branded pellets per pig.
Hay: An unlimited supply of Orchard Grass Hay, Timothy Grass Hay, or blue Grass Hay will need to be provided. The preferred brands are Oxbow and KAYTEE.

Vegetables: The basics to know about veggies is that high calcium is bad, high sugar is bad, and high vitamin c is good. Here is a list showing the good, bad, and ugly for piggy veggies. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/threads/22156-READ-ME-Cavy-Nutrition-Charts-amp-Poisonous-Plants-List

Wondering why all of the Oxbow and KAYTEE brand? Because many other brands are junk food for pigs. Imagine trying to live off of chips for a living- not very healthy!

You might ask how much veggies to give. Well, here are some sample veggie diets.

I hope this helped with the food! Also, how about telling us what you know so that we can fill on the rest? :) There is just SO much to learn about guinea pigs!

Do you know about.. Proper cage sizes? Where to house them? Play time? Signs of sickness? Finding a vet? These would be good places to start if your not familiar with these topics. Also, be sure to click around this website- all of their information is foundational to this site. http://www.guineapigcages.com/index.htm If you explore the forum, you'll also find more information turn up. :)

Welcome! :)

If you live in the US then getting KMS Hayloft (they only sell online) hay and pellets in bulk is the cheaper option in the long run. Plus it is the best brand out there. Oxbow would be the next but it has more calcium so your pigs could develop stones later.

I could be wrong but I've heard nothing from Kaytee is good.

Well I live in Ireland.
I know to vary veggies every day.
I know acidic fruits give mouth sores.
Fruit is a treat.
hay is 24/7 and a spot check on poo every day and major clean once a week at the least.
Lap time and floor time every day.

It seems like your on the right track! You may or may not know about these other few basics. I'll list them and their links below for you to check up on.

Cage Sizes: http://www.guineapigcages.com

Where to put your cage: http://www.guineapigcages.com/safety.htm

Symptoms of illness to keep an eye on: http://www.guinealynx.info/emergency.html

Also, just to let you know, you will need to take your pig to the vet whenever it gets sick. When I first got guinea pigs, I thought they never needed to go to the vet. I was terribly mistaken! :)

One more thing. Many users of this site refer to c&c cages and fleece bedding. I'll give you the links below if you don't know what those are!

I know not to put them near. Vents windows or radiators.
C&c cages are not an option in my house but I have a two storey cage and Shem measured was big enough for a all three.
Lulu had uri and we brought her to our local vet and he cut her nails and said she is quite delicate and gave her antibiotics and the bleeding stopped after a day or so.
I know if you see any unusual behavior vet.
Eye rusts vet
ear discharge vet.
Any thing unusual vet ,and as they are prey animals they hide illness so predators don't pick them out as easy targets.
