Can I spray paint the cage that I have? I have the MidWest habitat thing, and we're building a custom cage. I was to use the cage itself in the design of the new cage. Can I spray paint it? Will it be safe for my piggies?

There is even this stuff, Shop Plasti Dip 11 Oz. Black Matte Spray Paint at Lowes.com (http://www.lowes.com/pd_42849-61158-11203-6_4294720379__?productId=3543514&Ns=p_product_avg_rating|1)

It seems to give it that plasticy coating.

Also, what is the suggested height for piggy cages?

OH! Krylon: H2O Latex (http://www.krylon.com/environment/h20/) Apparently this is a latex, low VOC spray paint! Can I use it?!

i think it's not really recommended, but if your piggies don't chew on the cage .... maybe?
the best tip from an old thread: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/about-cages/60710-spraypainting-grids.html

'In general, look for paints which:
- do not contain lead, zinc or chromate
- are "high adhesion", formulated to bond with the metal surface
- are hard-wearing
- are fast drying
- have the child safe picture on the can'

hope that helped somewhat :) that latex water based paint you linked sounded safe enough at least

I really wouldn't risk it. Even if appears safe, you never know how long-term exposure (chewing or even just releasing chemicals over time) will affect the pigs, ESPECIALLY since they are so sensitive.

I searched and searched the site and couldn't find a link! thanks!

meh. After reading the link, I'm not going to risk it. It isn't worth it. I'll just buy black grids.

That's a great solution! I wouldn't risk spray painting either.

And who knows, maybe I can sell the old midwest cages once we move out of them? :)

I wouldn't. The closest I would come to doing that would be to decorate the part of the bars that they don't come in contact with. I was thinking of a way to make a sign for it that says "Cavy Meadows". But that is different than painting.
