Hi, I'm getting my first rats soon after I get the cage and extra towels and fleece bowls and all that stuff, and I was wondering is this a good cage for two baby rats or is it too big? GIANT FERRET, RAT, BIRD 3 in 1 CAGE 1.8M TALL RRP $ 580 Metal Wire | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GIANT-FERRET-RAT-BIRD-3-1-CAGE-1-8M-TALL-RRP-580-Metal-Wire-/190778833395?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D6377291270954520234%26pid%3 D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D190778833395% 26#ht_3279wt_1139)
and also it has 1 cm bar spacing could baby rats fit through 1 cm or not?
also does anyone know any website or Youtube videos that show you how to make all kinds of hanging tunnels, hammocks really anything sewable for rats so I can sew them all kind of things, I will be making homemade rat food and I was wondering id anyone knows any really good recipes for them that is really heathly for them, sorry for all the questions and thanks :)

Congratulations on your rats! I had rats for years... and they were just AMAZING and I miss them SOOOOO much!!!!!!! That cage looks perfectly fine for rats, although I prefer Martin's Cages (personally) with a coating on them (not galvanized). Not sure about homemade food. I always just got the lab blocks. I was young (in my early 20s) so I didn't think much of seeking the optimal diet. They probably all had things they weren't supposed to.

Anything you find in guinea pig cages seems like it would probably work for the ratties.. but they like to climb. But tunnels, hidy huts and hammocks are a must! Mine always loved their hammocks!

Thanks, one of the reasons I'm making homemade food is that there is no where to get rat food where I live and i was told that home making rat food is the best option, I'm getting a sewing machine this weekend so I will be making all kinda of thing for them I know how to make the box hammock and the honey comb hammock and cuddle cups for pigs so I will be making tons for them :) I can't wait till I get them :3

That cage is great. Half an inch in whats recommended for bar spacing for babies so 1 cm is fine. You will have to cover the wire floors.

I'm actually getting my wife some rats when we move. I'm building a bookcase cage as I just love building things for my critters.

I have 3 ratties...I don't think I could handle babies..WAY to hyper for me..and the rescue had the best two adult girlies ever to go with my rescued de-sexed boy..t'was faith.

Anyway. What I was going to say is I have that cage (got it for only $200 NZD! New)..and i would really think about the door size, it's rather small and makes putting some bigger things (like their paint try for pea fishing or just swimming..) really really hard...
(Next month I'm ordering a DCN from the US to NZ as I need the better doors!)

Also. You'd have to buy things to make levels for it..I just used cake trays, cut out a lino the size of them and then clip some fleece on the lino..tada! I love my easy liners!

If you have time..I have some pictures of my cage in my personal rattie pic thread - Ratclub.org And RANZ • View topic - Rodent-Cuddles Ratties *Pic heavy* (http://www.ratclub.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18967)

I should of also said...The cage also isn't meant for rats, so their pee makes it rust after a few months....something else to think about. (:
