I know this is a piggy forum..So if this thread isn't allowed then I don't mind if it gets deleted..

Anyway.. apart from my piggies (my own ones and the ones in the rescue), cats, fish, mice and my rabbit..I also have 3 ratties.
(Will go up to four in 3 - 5 months once I get a bigger cage..the cage right now is big enough for 13 ratties but am waiting till we get a new one that can fit 18 ratties)

There is my man Boris who is a neutered Dove hooded male rat, then there is Honey Boo Boo who is a tiny champagne Berkshire girl and last but not least is Tinker who is a black hooded girl with a black spot on her back left leg and an amazing white chin stripe. All are rescue. (:

Anyway..Here are a couple of my fav rattie pictures.....

Pictures of my three together...

Awh, I never knew they could be so cute! Why are they called "rattie" instead of "rat"? I feel like adding the extra syllable makes it harder to say! Haha. :)

The black and white one is my male rattie named Mikey and the light brown and white one is my female named Micha. I'm very new to owning rats and have only had them for a week and a half.

I'm really battling to get them tame though! They are 8 weeks old. Any advice would really be great.

Does anyone know what kind of rats mine are???

Oh, the black one has black eyes, and the brown one has red eyes if that helps at all?

I think your black rat might be a Berkshire, and the right looks like she might be a fawn hooded.

RodentCuddles
02-26-13, 01:07 pm
@Riot101 (http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/member.php?u=23364) Are you keeping them separated? Unless of course Mikey is neutered or Micha is sprayed... If you don't have either of then de-sex and they are living together please don't breed them...She can have as many as 24 babies...it would be so hard on her...and 24 more ratties in the world is a heck of a lot! (:
Plus with rat gentics breeders have to be very careful with not breeding the males till they are over a year to make sure he has never shown a sign of aggression to other rats or people...the female has to be over 6 months for the same reason plus she needs to grow.....
I don't breed mine (of course! Boris is neutered!) and would never plan to, there are already so many in the NZ Rat Rescue..one lady alone is a foster home for 52 rats right now.

I've heard babies are much more excited about everything and when I was rat sitting over the Christmas period, I rat sat 10 rats (3 different peoples rats) and the only one I did want to hold as I was to scared I'd lose her was the young 10 week old girl as she was so energetic and just ran around and had so much energy to burn. A week and a half isn't very long to of had them and get to know their personality..just wait till a month has gone by and you will understand them as their selves so much better.

Is the black one hooded? Or a bareback? He deff doesn't look like a self or Berkshire..he has too much white on his belly. (:
The other one looks like a over coloured hooded..but I'm no good with colours...thats just from me browsing the rat forum.

Riot101
02-26-13, 01:17 pm
Noooooo, I'd NEVER breed my babies! All my male piggies are neutered but my exotics vet says he will only neuter Mikey when he is 4 months old, so for now they are in two separate cages but they can still see each other, just not touch each other. They are brother and sister from the same litter.

Riot101
02-26-13, 01:21 pm
I have no idea what kind they are (I'd loooove to know). Both have their whole head coloured and their bellies are both white. The colours go strips down their backs.

RodentCuddles
02-26-13, 01:27 pm
I'd guess you have a black hooded boy and and fawn hooded girl...but I'm not 100% sure! (:

ETA: is her colouring more of a orange/fawn one or is it more like my dove hooded boy?

Riot101

More like a light orange/fawn colour...

So, how do I get my ratties to not wana jump out of my hands and run away in terror? I am talking to them and have been hand feeding them (sometimes they take it, sometimes they don't). But when I pick them up they wiggle and wana jump out and run away???

2 cubic feet per rat..but as you could tell I think that's too small...wayy to small..but others don't so it should be fine...lol, just me and big cages!(ratclub.org - cage calculator (http://www.ratclub.org/cgi-bin/cage3.cgi))

Here are some pic's from last week... (The cage (not stand) is 80cm wide x 49.5cm deep x 140cm tall)

No, 9 is right...9 per 2 cubic feet and 13 if you do the smallest at 1.5 cubic feet..lol, sorry! It can hold 9-13 ratties..
Yup your cage can hold 7-9 rats, you did it right. (:

RodentCuddles

@jenwillis212 (http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/member.php?u=27259) It's a 604T bird cage, I got it at $240 (NZD, instead of $520) from the pet shop here...I'm infact going to use my pocket money in a week or so and with 3 other people from NZ do an order for a DCN (save if four people order at the same time) as the small doors are really annoying me and the only cage made in NZ for pet rats in mind can only hold 3 rats at the most.

I've always loved sugar gliders but they're, like many animals not allowed in NZ (So I've never seen a sugar glider, hamster, gerbil, an alive ferret *they are pest and you're not allowed them as a pet* and heaps more...it sucks.).

So if you do get them, pretty please post some pictures for me!!

Why are all of those animals illegal?

Why are all of those animals illegal?

There's more (like snakes and stuff) animals.

(I could be wrong!)
For all of them apart from the Ferret's it's because that they have not be introduced to NZ so we don't want them as it could destroy our eco system, as we have rare and endangered birds, insects (and other animals...) we can't take the chance of a pet getting out and messing with the eco system. We also don't have rabies here, so they don't want to risk it being brought in.

Oh wow! That is interesting. I guess I never thought about there being places with no rabies. I had a pet ferret when I was younger and also a pair of prairie dogs. They banned the prairie dogs shortly after I got mine. It will be a while before I can manage getting the gliders but i will definitely post pics! New Zealand is on my bucket list of places to visit before I die. I would love to travel more. Australia and Africa are also on my list!

This forum is a bit old but I have a question about rats. I have heard that they are as messy as GPigs, is this true? I've always liked rats but I wasn't sure if I could handle gpigs, rabbits, dogs, horses, & rats. As gpigs are already really messy.

RodentCuddles
04-21-13, 12:26 pm
It all depends on the rat.

I have my three, Tinker loves tinkering and pulling the pillows I made them up into the hammocks to make a sort of nest, she also makes a mess; Honey Boo Boo is just a little cutie but poos outside of the cage and Boris digs up the bedding.

The four girls I'm rat sitting don't have any bedding or anything they can make a mess from (they don't even have a hammie!).
I rat sat 11 rats over Christmas. The cages with the girls all smelled, but the one with three boys didnt as much. Maybe I can just deal with the boys smell better or something...

But I'd totally tell you to adopt males. I only have one boy and when I just had him the smell wasn't too bad...now they have a rather bad smell...and the little girls down stairs also have the same smell. My cage only smells like nothing/okay for a day.
So when we adopt more rats, It's gonna be neutered males all the way!

....I just have to!
More pictures of my Honey Boo Boo..she devolved cataracts a couple weeks ago in her left eye.

Aww, really? :( I guess rats wouldn't be for me then. I don't think I could look at a male rats testicles, unless they were fixed, is that safe though? I've heard tons of horrible stories of small animals going under the knife & not waking up.

You can't see my boys testicles as we got him de-sexed when he was only a couple months old. The longer you leave it the more likely it is that they wont 'shrink' up. The rat rescue here de-sexes all rats of both genders (unless for some reason it would put the rat at too much risk). I do know that putting small animals under is risky, but we've so far had good luck with it and haven't lost any.

Couldn't you adopt already de-sexed rats?
And girls could be for you, I could just be strange! (:

ETA: I should also put down, that most rat owners (well the ones on nz rat club) de-sex all their rats for both health and temperament no matter what gender. It's only a very small amount of the rats who don't make it. Most do.

Many moons ago, I had two handme down rats. My sister got them for her sons but I ended up with them for a year or so and I gave them to another sister when I moved from home. She had them for like two years too, they devolved tumors and had to be put down. Mia and Tia use to nest in my hair and went around with me all over. Much different from piggies, they wanted attention from everyone.

Yes! I've found rat LOVE/CRAVE human attention. That's why I love them. While the pigs prefer to do their own thing, the rats want you're attention (and treats!).
They are so much more social with people then the pigs.

Well..it took 6 years.
When I was 7 I wanted Rats. I begged for 3 years. She got me two girl mice. Then my father got me 6 more girls from an owner who was looking for a new home for them. After that I had the 8 for around a year...I got a few habitrail mouses cage so I made them up ones connected together, worse thing ever. A wild male mouse got in with my 8 girls. Luckily only one girl got pregnant. She had 8 babies, but I didn't know she was preg until she gave birth to the first two and my other girls killed them. I then separated her from the other girls and she gave birth to 6 more. 3 boys and 3 girls. One boy and two girls escaped out of the cage, and one boy run away while I was holding him. The last boy was called Garfield as when he was born he was the biggest fella. Later on, I put him in a PetOne mouse cage and a male wild mouse got in as one morning I woke up and there was blood all in his cage, up my wall and on a small box containing a necklace my mother gave me. Garfield survived but lost half his tail. He then died from we think was a heart attack, he was over 2 years old and an amazing boy.
The last girl was too wild. I gave her 2 months to settled down. She didn't. She would bite me, run and attack me. She got PTS.

Here is a pic of my Garfield boy, He was an amazing, cuddly, people loving boy who was an amazing half wild boy:
4797047971

After that we welcomed into our house any mice that needed a home. Mums fear and 'hate' of mice and rats (Most rodents) soon disappeared and was replaced with a love for them.
Last year, we got asked to take Boris in. So we did. Got him de-sexed and then adopted Honey Boo Boo and Tinker. (:

It all could of been so different if I wasn't so adamant that I wanted rats. My mum would still probably be against rodents and would of not grown to love them.

I just got a mouse 3 days ago from Petsmart while i was in the city, it was a complete impulse move which is usually something my fiance does and not myself. It is a male so he is by himself and i havent even tried petting him yet lol but here are still things i want to do with his tank. I got hi ma 20 gallon long. i want to hang bird toys from the screen lid so he can climb around. i know this thread is about rats but i thought i would share.

here he is, oh and we named him Mouser lol

Lol, I can't post pictures of all my mice I've cared for...I've cared for over 120. But am letting the numbers drop, we had to put two girls down two weeks ago so now are down two 13.

I know a vet that de-sexes male mice. I never got my boys done. I only had 7, I had 6 in pairs and one whos two brothers were bullying.

Wow this brings back memories. Had my first rat in high school, all white with red eyes I named her "Scratchy" (use to love itchy and scratchy lol). We found her in my parent's backyard, she was very friendly towards us so my parents said I could keep her. Later found out neighbor kids/parents had let their pet rats go. We had only found her. Well she lived for another year, but died after surgery for a tumor. My parents called for three hours to get someone to look at her, as we didn't know about exotic vets then. A non-exotic vet performed the surgery and was really interested in her, did tons of research. That vet now does exotics, so that was one positive thing.

Later in college my now husband and I got two female rats Smudges and Squeakers. One was all black, the other was white with grey head and stripe down her back. We actually got a real cage with safe ramps and rat toys and well everything safe for them. We couldn't do plastic because our girls loved to chew and try to eat everything. Smudges died two years after we had her, no ideal why. Squeakers lived for five years then the last year of life she battled a parasite. Even though the parasite was successfully killed off by medications she just was never the same after that and died soon after. My husband and I couldn't take anymore heartache so we stopped getting rats then that was around six years ago. I still think of them fondly, I'll have to see if I have any pictures of them on this computer later.

clb89 You have NO idea how jealous I am of you!!!!
Self black rats are SO rare here, most can't be breed because they don't have a healthy line of genes (eg. Family members have URI's, cancer ect).

I want a self black so bad!! I'm just hoping a big fat chubby self black boy will get surrendered to the rescue and I'll be able to snatch him up! But's un-likely...most rat club members have been waiting 7 + years to get a self black, I know a couple who have been looking for over 10 years with no luck.

More pictures of the four girls I'm rat sitting...my brothers head in the first pic. I had just cleaned their cage and put in two new hammocks i just sewed as they didn't have any!

I love the hammocks you have for them. It's like they are at an amusement park. Did you make them yourself? I buy my rattie hammocks from a girl on the internet who makes them. However, I am constantly having to sew up the holes that my girls chew in them. But, they have so much fun playing in them that I don't mind.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your mouse. It's never easy to have to say good-bye. A lot of people ask me how can I have rats when their lifespan is so short. I just feel that I give them the best life that I can for as long as I have them. I know you do the same. One look at those precious faces of your rats and I can see how completely happy they are.

Don't you just love when they run up to the side of their cages when they see you? They really do love their owners.

You take such good pictures, your ratties are gorgeous! (I especially love Boris).

I think it comes down to personality in the end, Marvel loves human interaction. Whenever I go near his cage he automatically runs to the side of the cage for cuddle time.

I love your hammocks! I am a horrible sewer :s Last time I attempted a hammock I broke my Mum's sewing machine (oops).

Any helpful hints on how to keep the sharpness of there nails down?
You could use a human nail file and sand down the sharp tip of the nail.
Not a rat, but I'll post a picture anyways :)

@MochaAndMoo (http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/member.php?u=26046) I've also had many mice who love human interaction *and others who didn't care*...but I just love the way rats are like monkeys how they use their paws to hold your finger and sniff it..turn, lick it, hang off it ect..they're like mini monkeys! They're just able to interact with people more..they're like a mix of dogs as they're so easy to teach stuff to (sit, come, stay, paw ect) and like moneys with their cheeky inquisitive side!

I loved all my mice and I miss the days I would set up then watch them *Molly was the best! She was just amazing at it!* do an agility course I'd set up with tunnels, jumps, ropes to walk on and balance, things to climb up ect.

I made them a cage out of old cage parts. Not sure if its big enough but i wayyyyy better then the tank they lived in before. If i didnt take them they would be fed to hawks. so weird that my school would do such a thing besides the fact that they fed them very bad treats. I dont have names yet tho.

RodentCuddles where did you purchase your cage? Or did you make it yourself? It looks like a lovely home to 3 spoiled ratties.
