I know! If I weren't going away for a work trip I would totally take him in now.. I am actually looking for a friend for my piggie. My local rescue will be minding him while I am away so in that time they are planning on pairing him up with a friend! :)

He looks like a chestnut satin. It also looks like a breeders page.

@YourSoJelly - Just curious, how do you know its a breeder from the photo? I have never seen an orange guinea pig before. Thought he looked gorgeous.

Becau8se of how they worded "The males can only live with males." Like she has more to the litter and she is breeding more litters.

@YourSoJelly - ok.. well i just called her and she said she has 7 guinea pigs.. there is no rehoming fee for this one as she wants to find him a good home. She could be a breeder.. im not sure.. but he was just too cute not to post. :p

He's a satin, and probably will develop osteodystrophy, a painful joint disease. Satins are known carriers for osteodystrophy, but breeders keep breeding them because people like the shiny hair.

Thats terrible! If she is a breeder, it would explain why shes getting rid of him then.

@YourSoJelly What makes you think so? I don't get a breeder vibe at all. I get someone who is trying to deperately rehome the pig. Maybe I'm wrong. I think an email is in order.

@2198lindsey - i called - but im still not sure if she breeds them, i got the impression that she takes them in from people- but she did get a little touchy when i asked how many she had. This one has no rehoming fee.

--edited-- haha we must have posted at the same time :p

Yup. It takes a history of breeder searching to find the little details.

He is very cute! Just curious but if it was a breeder don't you think they'd charge though? Or sell to a pet store? I wouldn't assume someone giving away a guinea pig is breeding. Is that common? And why would they do that?

Like someone said before bc of health issues they wouldn't want to risk anything. Plus vet bills.

I had a satin who died of complications from osteodystrophy. I'd stay away for that reason, although otherwise I'd be all over that piggy.

I do, however, fail to see how this ad "sounds like a breeder" and think it's fairly silly and sad that folks here sometimes look so desperately to find something like that. If it were a breeder, what would she care if males live with females? If anything I'd think she'd not be suggesting he only live with other males, that's for sure. It's also comical to think it's a breeder because you've got a "history of breeder searching to find the little details." That's fairly comical, actually. That aside, a person having 7 guinea pigs isn't an indication of anything - many folks here have that or more, or near that amount. I did at one point.

I think it's a little sad and a disservice to pigs looking for homes to be so desperate to see them as "breeders" because you think you have an eye for it. Breeders that advertise on CL usually say so loud and proud and don't give away animals for free and suggesting they live in same-sex pairs.
