NZ peeps, which brand of pellets do you feed your piggies? I'm having a hard time looking for really good ones. The pellets that I've seen so far are always mixed with seeds and grains, and other artificial looking junk. The plain pellets are mostly not hay-based. I've had a look at the ingredients list (especially at the stuff sold at animates) and the main ingredients are "barleymeal, peameal, wheat middlings, soybean hulls" to name a few.

I think the closest to hay-based pellets that we can find here are lucerne, but that's alfalfa, and from what I've read, it's only good for babies and pregnant/lactating sows.

I thought about probably ordering bulk online, but then with NZ's strict importing laws, I don't think this will be possible.

I can't find anything good either! Everything's alfalfa based... :(

Hi the best pellets I could find is LM Animal Farms Bonanza Gourmet Diet Guinea Pig Food. It is alfalfa based but does have timothy hay as well. I know its not a great food but I think it must be better than the junk food they sell as rabbit/guinea pig food! We can't get the good stuff from the US and Oxbow AU would sell to us here (not sure about that now, I checked about a year ago) but postage was too much....it was $150 per 12 kgs and that did not include the pellet price!! No real demand here....everyone seems to be happy to feed rabbit food! :(

Where can you buy the LM Bonanza food? Would they have it at Animates?

Diet and Nutrition (http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition/?prefixid=Pellets) (sorry I see the link did not work.....if you are interested I will try and get the right one for you)

You can read the replies I got when I asked about pellets before. I was told to rather feed veggies only instead of the bad pellets. That is an option. I don't think I have seen that brand at Animates, they only sell their own brand, Kaytee and Vitakraft. You can find Bonanza online but they are also not the cheapest! What pellets are you using now? Where do you get your hay from? From Animates? I am having a hard time to get nice hay. Have you found something for your cage yet?

I haven't gotten my guinea pigs yet... I'm getting them in about 3 weeks! :)
So I haven't yet bought any hay or pellets because I'm not sure which ones to get. I think I'll probably get my hay from Four Seasons Pets which is in the St John's area. Here's the website: http://www.fourseasonspets.co.nz/ Although it might just be the same quality as Animates  The cage... I'm still working on! lol

HI RodentCuddles
I have already tried that....they will send to us but postage is nuts!! I phoned Oxbow in OZ and they quoted me $145 dollars for postage only and that was for 12kgs of pellets.....pellets was an extra on top of that.....unless you have lots of money it works out way to much! I must add that I checked on this about a year ago and it doesnt hurt to check out again.
We don't get anything else that is good I tried a couple of online people and all said they only stock what they have and will not bring in anything new unless they have high demand as they need to bring in a good couple of pallets at a time. I will keep looking and let you know if I find anything!!

Wow, The postage is nuts!! I'll try them just in case, I can't believe how much the postage is. If not I will go to both of the Vet Clinics in Auckland and ask them if they could seeing as they already stock the Stocks Critical Care for Herbivores (syringe feeding formula).

What do you feed your piggys? I wanna get my pigs the best that I can.
Thanks

well thinking about it if we maybe chip in anyway we could get away with a 1 kg bag for about $25-30......its not that bad is it? We should really look at it as a group, how many kiwi's would be interested in a bag? we would need atleast say 10 people....what do you think? Well lets see if we can still get it first and what they are charging now!

Bad news...

Got an email reply back saying:

Hi,

Sorry to have to tell you that the only Oxbow product with current permits for NZ is the syringe feeding formula, Critical Care for Herbivores. The other products are not able to be shipped over.

Thanks for your enquiry.

Hi
Ok so I found someone that is making guinea pig food here in NZ, I am still waiting for some more info but so far it looks good. It is timothy based with meadow and lucerne. No seeds or bits so that could be good right? Well I will see if I can get more info on this.

RodentCuddles

I got a email!!! Looks very good!
Hello

We are the local agents for Oxbow products and we currently import a limited range from Specialised Animal Nutrition in Australia – who passed on your contact details. I understand you are interested in the Guinnea pig foods available there.

Due to the previously limited demand, and the high MAF compliance costs of importing these, we have not been able to import more than the a very limited range of foods. However if the demand is growing then we would certainly re-consider this. We are always looking for partners to assist with growing the interest in higher quality foods for small mammals. Perhaps you might be able to help us with this? I would be happy to discuss further if you wish.

Kind regards

Hi
This seems good cos I have phoned this vet before and they did not want to help. I will see if I can email or phone this vet and see if we can get somewhere. Maybe we should see how many of us would be interested in this food here in NZ. I know atleast one other person here in NZ that will be very keen. Calling all Kiwis!! Who would be interested in this food??

Hi
I got this reply from the vet.....

"It is a bit of a problem getting these foods here as special import permits are required. So far there hasn’t been the demand to justify the costs involved. We are currently reassessing this though so perhaps we will be able to make this available later in the year.

Thanks for your interest."

This seems like they are atleast looking in to it.

I now get my pellets from the Little Chinchilla Rescue In New Zealand (http://littlechintas.webs.com/). As they also make guinea pig food.
My piggys feel in love with the food on their first taste test!

It seems to be the best I can get for my piggys!

Small animal rescues in Australia make their own mixes, instead of forking out for the expensive Oxbow. The mix at Porsche's Small Animal Rescue is particularly good: Porsche's Small Animal Rescue (http://porschesrescue.com/products/feed.html) If you contact her (or the Australian Cavy Sanctuary) they'll probably be willing to share their "recipe". I would not normally recommend a mix, and expensive as it is in Australia, I personally feed Oxbow. Given how difficult/expensive/impossible it is for you guys to get a quality pellet, though, it may be better to feed a small amount of a high quality mix rather than a low quality pellet or no pellet at all.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with the ones from the chinchilla rescue. She has guinea pigs as well and she has done her research.
