I am trying to figure out how big a cage 6 female guinea pigs would need.
Today I built them a 3 by 5. Previously They were in the top of a 2 by 4 cage that had 3 levels. The bottom was just storage.
The two single boars have been in a very large cage in my bedroom

I am now trying to figure out how to configure the cages for 6 females on one level and then boars on another. The boys can not go together because the three boars beat the crap out of the other two.

Can someone tell me if trying a cage this size will work?
Also if I were to split one of the cages for the boars am I better to split it 2.5 grid by 3 each or should I split it 2 by 3 for the pair and 3 by 3 for the trio?

Your boars need a bigger cage than a 2x3. A 2x3 is way to small for 2 males. A 2x3 is recommmended for one gp. For 2 gp's you need a min. of a 2x4 and for boars it could even be bigger. Bigger is better for boars.

A 2x6 is recommended for 4 pigs so 6 pigs would need almost double that.
Levels do not count as the footage for guinea pigs. They need the room to run and have room to be free of each other if need be. You have to have room for the hidey houses and bowels.

I guess i didn't explain well enough that I am building a cage where males would be housed on one level and females on another. There will be no ramps.
the cages will be two separate stacked cages
How do I build a 3 by 5 double level cage so it doesnt snag or fall apart?

Suzilovespiggies: Why would 6 piggies need double what four need and not double the recommended

I have three females in a 2 x 5. I think it would be too small for 4 females. I agree that two males need at least a 2 x 4. I have two very laid back males in a 2 x 4 but don't think it would work if either of them was territorial.

I have a 2x5 over a 2x4. The top cage was sagging in the middle so I added a 1x1 wooden I-beam I attached to the grids with metal brackets. I have sheets of coroplast on the inside of the lower level to protect the walls so you can't see that there are grids supporting the second level there. I have grids under the first and second levels to keep it secure. Heavy duty zip ties hold it all together.... I would think that 6 female guinea pigs would need a 4x5 or a 2x10 or you'd need two 2x5's for two trios. You'd need a 2x4 for two males and a 2x5 for the other three... unless they are territorial... then go larger.

I have two 2x4 cages stacked. Just look at my albums on my profile. You could stack the same or similar way.

What if you did a 4x4 on the top for the 6 females and then on the bottom two cages of 2x4 to separate the boys. I think I did the math right. Sorry just trying to Help.

Or a 2x8 and the bottom could again be 2 2x4's.

I think this would work better because a 4x4 on the top level would be really hard to clean. I can just reach the far wall on my upper level. It would be impossible to reach into a 4x4 on top.

Thank you for your suggestions.
I have done the bottom as a 3 by 5 with wood strapping running the length to stablise it.
The second storey is partly done.We ran out of zipties and the coloplast I have is not large enought to cover.
Tomorrow we will go out and get more of what we need.
