I am courious a friend sent me a book called The Jungle, I was wondering if any of you had read it, it is from a Author named Upton Sinclair Perhaps best known for its effect on the United States meat packing industry (its exposé of conditions in meat packing plants led to legislation regulating the industry), it in fact builds a case for socialism. I believe this book was written in 1906.

I was just courious if you had read it, and how was it,
If you had read this, did it have any influence on beommong a veg, well thanks, here is a website I found, it has the enitre book online free to read

(broken link removed)

If you guys are interested in reading it.

Thanks,

I don't know the details of it. I just heard it was about the meat packing industry.

It is an older book but what he says in the book was true at the time. I read it but it was a long time ago. The meat packing/slaughterhouses in the Chicago area were notorious at the time the book was written.

We discussed this book extensivly during one of my history classes. The book itself helped to bring about awarness as to what was happening in the meat packing industry and in food packaging in general. It helped to bring about social reform at a time when social reform was being scrutinized. Middle class reform, eg.. better food, less sickness, safer lives... as far as the middle class were concerned. The most shocking part stated that the rats were poisoned, I think using poison and bread, droppings, rats, bread poison etc. was just swept into the food. Pretty gross!!! Great book, but laws were changed in part due to it... hopefully food isn't as gross as it was back then. I don't think we eat as much rat dung & rat poinsons anymore, we just have to worry about steroids. Etc. we've come a long way. haha

I read it for an AP English class in high school. I'm not a vegetarian, but it definitely makes you think. It's incredibly graphic, and if you have a weak stomach at all, I would recommend staying away.
