Hello there - we just started out our guinea pig journey about a month ago. We have always had dogs, but this is the first time for guinea pigs. Our daughters paid for adoption and some expenses - so they are technically their pets.
It has been an interesting journey so far & I think I am going to create a new thread in the medical section for more questions.
We have always rescued our pets from shelters - I don't know why it didn't occur to me to do that for guinea pigs. But my daughter fell in love with one at the pet store when we were purchasing dog food and so our journey began.
She had 3 different pigs in about 2 weeks that all turned out to have problems or illnesses. It has really hard for us all, but quite a learning experience. Our older daughter also got "Clemintine". We at least found a great vet through this process and learned a lot of guinea pigs!
We finally adopted a guinea pig from the shelter - "Maisy". Maisy seemed great when I picked her up, but I noticed a bit of sneezing the 2nd and 3rd day home. She is on her 2nd round of antibiotics. Hopefully things will get better and the girls can start living together. (We did let them meet once when we though Maisy was well. Hopefully Clemintine will stay that way! And I feel bad that Maisy doesn't get to be in the big space with Clemintine. Soon...)
