Hello! My name is Elliot, and I own the Poképigs! I'm 21, and live in California. I'm new to owning guinea pigs, but I have almost always had rodents (rabbits, rats, hamsters, chinchillas, etc).

Me getting guinea pigs is actually because of a gopher. The last rodents I had were two chinchillas, who ended up moving to a new, loving home due to extenuating circumstances. I missed having rodents, but I didn't realize how much I missed them until my fiancé and his brother caught a gopher in the back yard. We thought about keeping her, but decided it would be best to set her free and get a different, already-domesticated pet instead.

We did a little research, and when everyone told us just how lovable and people-friendly guinea pigs were, we knew they were the pets for us.

Poké is short for Pokémon. My two pigs are named Eevee and Bidoof. We initially got Eevee and had her in a small, store-bought cage (don't worry, she was only in there a week!). When we brought her home, I sat down and really started researching guinea pigs and their habits and needs, etc. I quickly realized (1) she needed a friend, and (2) her cage was WAY too small, even for her. Yea, she was probably alright for a little while because she was still a baby, but I wanted her to be happy and SPOILED!

So a week later, we picked out Bidoof and brought her home. That weekend I spent two entire days building them their own coroplast and grid cage, with a loft area. It took me 2 days because the first one I built didn't have a coroplast bottom, and the black cage connectors made me angry, so I tossed them and used zip ties instead.

The other thing I realized was that I didn't want to pay so much money for bedding when they would just toss it out of the cage (despite the 6" barrier), and it needed to be replaced every day or so. So I made them some cute fleece bottoms for the cage. I need to get a towel I don't care about to put underneath, but other than that their cage is done and the babies are totally happy! Popcorning, running around, and eating all the veggies and hay!

Here are some gratuitous pictures of the Poképigs and their cage.

Hi, Elliot, We have six guinea pigs and my profile photo is of our Pikachu, who passed away last year. My son, who is now 20 yearz old, named her Pikachu because of her coloring and because she had a marking on her head that reminded us of a lightning bolt. After she passed, we sponsored a senior male he named Raichu.... the last evolution of a Pikachu. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos of your Pokepigs. Welcome!
