So I bought cubes for a 2x4 cage for my pig today. I'm having trouble with the kitchen area. When I first adopted him he was in a pet store cage a little smalled than a 2x3. This cage had a loft about 6 inches off the ground with a ramp attached. Needless to say he would jump to the loft and the only use for the ramp was to get down (which he hardly used. He would jump down.) In this new cage I had the idea of doing a sort of shelf type of loft. Its roughly four inches off the ground, because chances are he will not use the ladder. I was wondering what every ones opinion is on this?

Please note that I used ribbons to hold up the grids because I have not yet gotten zipties yet. This cage is by no means even close to being finished. I just wanted input before I put even more time into it.

(note he was just sniffing the box)

Sorry for the length. Thanks in advance!

If you look through the cage design thread there are several that are similar. I was even watching some videos on youtube the other day where the piggies had a ledge to jump up on.. they seemed to enjoy it.

I would run a wooden dowel across the bottom, or a piece of pvc pipe to support the bottom.

A small jump, in my opinion, would be fine. Ideally when making a second story you have a wall to keep them from jumping off. However from that height I am sure it would be fine. It is the same concept as jumping on and off of the pigloo.

The only two issues to keep in mind with that is to have a backup plan if your piggy ever for some reason should not jump due to medical issues. Also, this would not be a good idea for an older guinea pig as they could hurt/exhaust themselves more easily.

What you could do is put a small brick in there someplace so he could hop/step onto the brick and then onto the loft. Mine like to climb on stuff like that.

The brick sounds like a good idea. Id also like to get him a pigloo to but right buy it. I will definatly do a support of some type.

Once he does get old, which wont be for a long time, I will proally end up just moving the kitchen area down stairs.

Thank you!
