Tips to make sure she is fine

Hi!

I am really really new in the forum, so I hope i am not posting in the wrong section or doing something else wrong...

I am also quite new with guinea pigs...I have had my first one for 3 months now and about 2 weeks ago we bought another female to make her company. (I know, not really good to buy them in pet stores, but I could not find any kind of shelter in my area.)

Anyhow, about 2 days ago we started noticing that "Aimee", the new one, is getting slitly fater, and she lies in the corner of the cage for a long time...So we got worried and so I have allready asked for an appointment with a vet that expecialises in guinea pigs, but in the mean while I want to make sure that she is fine.

Is there any special care that we should take? Any kind of info would be really helpful, I just really want to make sure we are taking good care of her.

Do you know how old Aimee is?
It could be she's just growing if she's a young guinea pig. Or it could be that she's just a lazy piggy. My male Piggy likes to lie in the corner of his hutch for a long time, he's very lazy, he doesn't tend to like the sound of excersize, which results in him being a bit fat. I do try to get him to run around, but he never seems bothered, he just sits there and eats.

She could possibly be pregnant if you got her from a pet store though, it happens a lot. My female Amy was pregnant when I first got her, but she didn't really grow any bigger, she was really small, I didn't have suspcions until 2 days before she gave birth, and that was after a month having her.
I'd stick with taking her to a vet, just to be on the safe side. I hope everything will be ok. Good luck.

We hear that we can't find guinea pigs to adopt excuse too many times and it is usually not true. You can find ones to rescue if you look hard enough and are patient. Rushing to a pet store is never acceptable and you end up with sick or pregnant pigs like you did.

Are you absolutely sure they are both females?

What type of cage are they in and what are you feeding them? Quality feed is vital esp to pregnant pigs. You should take them both to a cavy vet for a check up.

Hey,

So, I will be taking them to a vet today

I have also started to put both of them on a scale and noticed that Aimee has been gaining more weight than my other piggie.

About food, I give them 2 types of vegetables every day, and I try to vary as much as possible. I also give them the food you buy in pet stores (I dont know the proper name in English) and they also have plenty of fresh water.

I don't know if I should give some type of vitamins or not...

About the sex, yes I am sure they are both females, we have checked many times and I have asked other people who know more about guinea pigs to have a look as well.

2 veggies per day is not enough. Daily staples should consist of 3-5 veggies and then you should have at least the minimum of 5 or more rotating veggies.

You need plain pellets only. Not pellet mixes with seeds, nuts, dried veggies or other bits and bobs in it.

If you feed a good variety of veggies you don't need vitamin supplements as they will get what they need from their food.

Are you giving unlimited grass hay daily? It's essential and I don't see it mentioned in your post.

Hey!

So Aimee really was pregnant, has the vet told us.

She delivered today to cute piggies

She didn't make a sound!

I am thinking of taking all of them to the vet soon to check if everything is ok.
