Hello,

I am new hear and have adopted 2 small cavies and because of space issues, I need to build a decent size cage, but can only afford room length rather than width. I WAS thinking of building a structure that is 1ft wide and 6 1/2 feet long in length. I was wondering if this was suitable for the two guinea pigs that I have. i would think the lenght of 6 1/2 feet would be really good to run back and forth. Can I get some input on the width? is it ok to have it just 1ft wide ???

Thanks,
Jimmie

I am not really sure. That is less than one C&C grid in width! Is there no way you can move furniture and stuff around a bit? I have the same space issues but can just about manage 2 stacked 2x4 cages for my 5 piggies. It is the absolute minimum for that many.

The minimum cage space for 1 to 2 pigs is 7.5 feet.

There's a picture of a cage that is one cube wide and snakes round the internal wall of a house, sorry but I can't find it. If I do I will post it up but it is about 10cubes long. You have to make the best of the space you have available and anything is better than a store bought cage! The minimum requirement would b 1x7 but maybe you could make it L shaped or something to fit round some furniture? That's what we did when we first built a cage. Also try making a collapsible run that could be attached when you are out of the house? That way i wont inconvenience you but they get extra floor time. Hope that helps.

The photo on jenniwat001 link is too small. There are comments on that thread in regard to making it wider.

I found the above link concerning the same person and same style having made it wider. Maybe this is something you can consider instead.

The length would be good but it needs to be wider so you have room for all their accessories and room for them to run mad laps. If you went with at least 24"-30" wide and 6 1/2 feet in length, that would be more appropriate.

thanks for everyones suggestions. I built the cage a foot and a half wide and 6 1/2 long. It really seems like they love it and seems a lot bigger than what I have seen others in. i will think about building wider once they grow bigger, but for now it seems to be perfect for their size!

Would you be able to post a pic? I'd be interested in seeing what you've done.

That cage in your photo album isn't a foot and a half wide. It's less than one grid across so it has to be under a foot.

They really do need a wider space.

And the log you have in there is not recommended for them.

Are you measuring the inside of the cage or the outside? You need to measure the inside to get the correct measurements.

There is no way your cage is 18 inches across if a grid is only 14 inches across and your grid at the ends is bent, so it is less than 14 inches.

At most, it is 9 or 10 inches across.

Jimmie22,
I think your cage looks very cool and it matches your room perfectly. But it is too narrow. I have a 2x6 cage (about 27"x84") and I still hear my boys bump into the coroplast on the side of the cage when they run laps. I see some extra room between your cage and the window, perhaps you can expand their cage a little more?

By the way, how old are your pigs? Mine are 4 months old and I think younger pigs are more active than older pigs, hence, they need more room.

I am sorry to disagree with you but the width is not wide enough for them at all. The length is fantastic and the style is really good.
