Hello, everyone! My name is Ellen, and I don't have a guinea pig quite yet, but I will be "fostering" two starting tomorrow! Here's my story...

I'm a third grade teacher, and a parent in the school asked if anybody wanted two female guinea pigs - and since I've always wanted one, I spoke up and offered to take them. Well, turns out that they're in an apartment that does not allow animals, so they want me to keep them until the summer time and hopefully they'll have a house by then. I was a little disheartened by this, but then I came to the conclusion that it'll be a good time for me to learn a lot, teach my students a lot, and at the end of the school year, I will be able to get some guinea pigs of my own. So, I came here for some support/help.

I can't wait to get them tomorrow! :) Any suggestions as far as introducing them to my students and such? They're all around 8 or 9 years old.

Hello there, and welcome!

Are they staying in your home, or the classroom?

Welcome Ellen4God! Thats quite the unusual user name!

Guinea pigs should NOT be kept as classroom pets. Usually you can't provide the correct cage and piggies are prey animals so having roudy kids around all day yelling and screaming can be very stressful. Also, if you bring them homeon weekends the change can be another very stressful time. Please, don't keep them as classpets.

Welcome! By the way I love your username. ;)

Just to warn you, the people here are very adamant about animal care and safety...they may come across as mean or rude but they mean well.

I don't know much since I've only had my piggies for about a week, but almost everything I know I learned here, so I'm glad you decided to come here and I'm sure you'll get all the information you need.

Hi and welcome.

I am a newbie too & it is my first time having the guinea pigs own me as their parent (I don't even know why that I even feel bad for saying that "I own them" but I am really their slave in fact).

My piggie has been with me for only 7 weeks & I love them to be a part of my family.

This is a great place to gather info, research & learn how to best care for your piggies. I have been on this site, guinealynx, cavymadness as well as google & youtube 1 plus month doing research before being a pig-parent.

And it is a great job being a teacher who believes in learning who in turn will teach many info to any potential pig-parents in your students! Learning is such a beautiful thing. A big welcome to this very interesting, info packed site.

Welcome!

I ditto Animalhouse. I wouldn't keep them in the classroom. It really is very stressful to pigs, and I wouldn't want to do that to them.

Hope you enjoy it here, it is packed with useful information!

Have fun fostering some piggies, they are fun little criitters!:D

Hi and welcome!
I wouldn't keep them in a classroom, because the noise of the children and the space usually doesn't allow for a proper cage. Keeping them at home would be the better solution. :)
P.S-I love your username! ;)
