What are your options or how could you do it, you mean? You could build a 2x1 on either end or both, a 1x4, a 2x2, a 2x3, or even a whole nother 2x4 on top.

yea, I want to put one on the edge would a 2X1 or 1X4 be ok?

I have a 1x4 loft on top of my L shaped 2x4, yes it's fine.
