My guinea pig abi has extremely dry skin, and i dont know why. What can i put on her to moisturize it? Also she scratches her skin cause its so dry and has two open sores, and a healed one what can i do for that?

Moisturizer won't do any good. Your guinea pig most likely has mites: Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites (http://www.guinealynx.info/mites.html)

You need to get ivermectin and treat them asap. Mites are very painful. She is scratching because she has parasites biting at her under her skin.

are you serious? where can i get that and how much is it? and how do i be sure she has mites?

Oh no, can they pass to my bunny?

06-15-08, 05:24 pm
i looked at that site, and im pretty sure she has mites

i feel so bad for her, im about to cry!

Guinea Lynx :: Ivermectin (http://www.guinealynx.info/ivermectin.html)

so i need to take her to the vet?
how much will it cost?

Did you read the links?

The mites guinea pigs typically get are species specific. Your rabbit won't catch them. They don't live together, do they?

You can have your vet administer ivermectin shots or buy/order ivermectin and do it yourself. Here Guinea Lynx :: Ivermectin Products (http://www.guinealynx.info/ivermectin_products.html)

No of course they dont live together, sorry im asking so many question im in the process of reading all the sites and freaking out
but ill read them all and post any questions if i have them

rabbitsncaviesluv---- just wondering the site you gave me had a lot about cattle products, can those be used for a guinea pig?

06-15-08, 06:06 pm
Yes, ivermectin and 99% of meds for guinea pigs are used off label for them.

06-15-08, 06:34 pm
wait what, im sorta confused... so most gp meds are for cattle also?

one question, how expensive is it?

06-15-08, 07:48 pm
Ivermectin is typically used as a horse or cattle dewormer. But it treats for mange, mites and other parasites in many other species, including guinea pigs.

The cost depends on what form you get and where you get it from. I order the injectible form (which you use topically). It's usually $30-40 online but it is $90 at my local feed store.

The paste is cheaper typically but you have to mix it and give it orally.

Oh okay geese i thought it'd be a little cheaper... Good thing i have the money now.
About how much cheaper is the paste?

Ivermectin is used for both guinea pigs and cattle, at the same dose rate. The difference is that a guinea pig is a 2 pound animal and a cow is a 2000 pound animal, so the pig gets 1/1000 as much of the medicine as a cow does.

The paste is usually $5-10. You want a paste that has only ivermectin in it, no other active ingredients.

Wow, I just saw that at Pet Supplies, Pet Products, Equine Supplies, Horse Supply, Vitamins, Nutritional Supplements, Livestock Supplies & Farm Supplies - Valley Vet Supply (http://www.valleyvet.com) they have some crazy cheap paste!

Equine Wormers - Free Shipping on orders over $60 (http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_product_group.html?cguid=739c20aa-efc4-41c5-a4e6-038ff7debbfa)

The Horse Health, Zimecterin, Equimectrin, or Agri-Mectin are all the right product. You will need some 1cc syringes ( Disposable Syringes w/out Needles (http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=c416c1ec-5a5f-45b0-b684-8dcb5fb1bece) ) and a sealed bottle you can mix it up with water in. A tube of horse paste will give you 5 doses for all your pigs. It has a spinning thing that you can set at each notch or number so when you squirt out the paste, you only get 1/5 at a time, which is what the GL instructions are calibrated for.

Thanks for those sites :)
Is this one? lol sorry, im just really confused.

Horse Health Ivermectin Wormer Single Dose Paste (http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_product.html?pgguid=918e92e1-bd78-41c8-aa36-2d4f8c7006f0&PGGUID=918e92e1-bd78-41c8-aa36-2d4f8c7006f0)

Do you know how long it takes to ship, because i need it as soon as possible.

06-16-08, 12:17 am
Yes. You'd need to click on the website and their shipping options. They may have priority or rush delivery as an option.

Do you have a kitchen scale Guinea Lynx :: Weigh Weekly! (http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html) ? You'd need to weigh your pig to calculate the dosage.

Okay thanks :) We are calling places now to see who has it.
