View Full Version : 2 Ferret Nations = Guinea pig cage?

I have a Ferret Nation (double level) for my ratties. It is the easiest and most amazing thing to clean.

Now onto my question..

What do you guys think about 2 double levels combined as a pig cage? The dimentions would be 25in x 72in. That is 12.5sqft. It would be 2 complete levels of that which is 25sqft not counting the mini levels. I realize that 'only the main level counts' but my pigs get along really well anyhow. The girls would def. travel to each level. Divinci would stay on whichever I put him on.

Im open to suggestions :)

EDIT: Oh, and of course I would modify the shelves and ramps so they are piggy safe.

They are beautiful cages. The inside demensions are 22.5 x 34.75 for the single unit. Is there some way to connect the units so that they are 4 units square? Like leave the backs off of the 4 units, put the doors facing outward? Then the inside demensions would be 45 x 70 -71 and all one level. Make sense? Just a thought.

Probably, but the main reason I am doing it is for space. My room is so very, very small. I have my bed, dresser, tv stand, bookshelfs, and the cage all in it. I really need something that is narrower that what I have now (42in) and easier to clean.

The Houston Rat Rescue is going to take my old cage. I am going to go after work to see if I can get the cages (Im at work now- I get off in an hour). I will be sure to post pics before, during, and after.

Oh, and I measured the inside and its almost exactly 25in (?) Maybe I measured wrong.

Aha. If I had the extra cash I would send all my GPC friends a birthday present. Or.. make a donation for them ;)

The store didn't have them so I am going to have to try another tomorrow.

Hey wicked! I didn't know if you bought the Ferret Nation cages but I have built two cages for my piggies from Lowe's shelving unit. It's cheaper and it's pretty big.

This is my cage (w/ 10piggies in it which is pushing it a bit on space but they all get along). I had to cut a hole in one of the boards to attach a ramp to the 2nd level. They have access to both levels.

And here's my foster cage. I have 2 piggies on each level.

I hope these help. I know I got this idea from someone else on here w/ a rescue. I like them because they're alot more stable. Good luck.

I'm working on making my 1 level into a 3 level 2 x 4 and hopefully going to add a new male to my Harry this weekend

Thanks Jenn but I just got back from buying the cages. I really don't mind spending the money on something that is going to last a long time and be really easy to clean.

Im almost finished putting the 1st one together.

I think the space is fine for your pigs, Wicked. Especially since they will travel between the levels. I think they're lucky piggies indeed!

You will be posting pictures of the finished "product," yes? :)

Happy decorating!

Whew, Im tired. I just spend like.. 4 hours straight putting the cage together. I will NOT follow the instructions next time. My ratties cage (also a FN) took me less than an hour (even though I messed up a few times). Dang instructions make it impossible for a single person to put the cage together.

So.. 1 Fn down, 1 to go.

Sadly, I have to work 12-5 tomorrow but I am going to do the 2nd one when I get home (assuming we aren't going to eat or something). Speaking of eating, I should probably eat dinner. Its 11:30.

I do have in-between pics..

Here is what it should look like finished:

Oh, and I didn't measure the width wrong.. My 23in pans (litterboxes) fit width wise in the cage.. Weird. Perhaps Midwest is giving out cages with mixed dimentions?

Ooo, wicked! Nice job! I love that it's on wheels. I put my cages on those slider thingys for furniture which has helped tremendously. I can get behind it to clean up the hay. I like the stability as well. Can't wait to see the finished product.

30mins and I get to go home and finish it (Im at work and anxiously counting down the minutes). I will be sure to post loads more pics!

Well, it's almost 7:30pm Central time, are ya finished? ;) I'm sure you're working hard on it. I know once I get started, I hate to stop and want to get it finished.

Unfortunatly my grandfather refuses to cut the sides tonight so I have to wait until the morning. I couldn't even guilt-trip him with the: "But graaannndppa.. its going to my birthday tomorrow".

So.. its put together but still needs to be cut and bolted together.

Currently:

First off. I completely in love with your rat cage. Brilliant!

Secondly, Im new to the site and I was wondering how many piggies you have that get the fancy new FN Piggy-Condo lol

And judging by the dates, its your birthday.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Now go eat cake :)

Happy Birthday wicked! Hoping that it's a good one.

Thank you both. :)

Its for 4 piggers.

As of now.. the sides have been sawed so they are open in the middle. My grandpa has to go tomorrow and buy bolts so we can connect them. I am going to test it out with fleece and such and take pictures tonight, if I can.

Tada:

The ramps are proving problematic. I might be forced to separate the herd if I cannot figure out a way to piggie-proof the middle ramp. The ones from the main levels to the mini-levels should be alright once I add the coroplast because of the double width. The other one.. I don't know.

Ah! :D It looks so cute so far, what lucky lil piggies! And what a wonderful birthday gift to yourself :P

JennG

Ok had to edit this because I can't read. :)

Anyways, when you add the coroplast, try to make it so the coroplast comes up to block the path onto the middle ramp. Give the piggies one access route to the ramp by creating a "wall" of coroplast to block them from falling. I think that's what you're worried about?

I kind of did this w/ my cage like this:

JennG

Looking at your cage again, it looks like you're having an issue on placement of the ramp as well. How about "building" a new ramp. Here's an idea I did w/ one of my cages to help get the piggies from one level to another. Maybe this may work. I made a coroplast box to fit in the landing to the ramps.

My idea is to put a little coroplast box held by a grid or something ziptied to the cage. You can then flip the ramp to go to the left onto the FN landing that's there. Does this make sense??

Those all are great ideas. I cant, however, build outside the main frame cage. I would be forced to cut more out of the cage to allow access and I doubt they would be any more comfortable.

I think what I am going to do.. Use coroplast to try and make a mini-mini-level RIGHT under where the ramp is.. and then have the ramp going down. Maybe they will hop up and down and then travel down the ramp.

Im FINISHED!

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d96/princessfionachanel/Cages/finisheddoublefn006.jpg

No bolts. Me being the impatient person that I am: I decided not to wait another day.. or week.. for my grandfather to go buy the bolts and attach it. It works fine this way. I have the wheels locked- Its not going anywhere.

For now my herd is in 2 groups. Daphne and Delilah are on top; Divinci and Donet are on the bottom. I tried to color/separate.. I was going for a pink theme on top and purple on the bottom. http://www.goosemoose.com/rfc/Smileys/classic/smiley.gif

wicked, please be careful with those hayracks. I recently posted about one of my adult fosters getting her head stuck inside of one. :(

wickedrodent
05-13-08, 02:18 pm
Oh gosh, really? Ill have to watch out. I would change them but they keep the cage so gosh darn tidy.

Harrys Dad: I don't think so. 2/4 go up and down easily. My other two are chubbers who never have liked going up and down any ramps at all. lol

Yes, this is the thread:

http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/accessories/35642-hayrack-warning-stuck-pig.html

I really wouldn't "wait" because it makes the cage neat. You could end up with a dead pig. We were extremely lucky. I took those out and modified them heavily to make the holes smaller.

wickedrodent
05-15-08, 01:06 am
I took them out today and cable tied 1/4in mesh to the outside where the holes are bigger. That should solve the problem. Thanks for the warning.

New picture. Believe or not I vaccumed everything RIGHT before I took this picture. Maybe 10 seconds. Somehow there is an array of piggie poops there already.

Nice work! Are the piggies enjoying the new digs? I'm sure they are.

wickedrodent
05-20-08, 07:31 pm
Seems so. :)

I think Do and Divinci are a bit more relaxed having their own part of the cage; Daphne can be a mean little bugger to them when she wants to be. She tends to leave Delilah alone- go figure.

I need to get more hideyhouses. I got new fleece today. More of the purple cowprint (yay!), a grey, and a grey with darker grey leopard spots.

Im addicted to fleece.

Paula
05-20-08, 08:30 pm
I am addicted to fleece too! Maybe we should start an online support group for fleeceaholics! :)

I think your cage looks really awesome. A lot of hard work - GREAT job!

wickedrodent
05-20-08, 08:33 pm
There is an un-official fleeceaholic support group on the rat forum. I can't even believe how much fleece some of those people buy.

Being on a limited budget, I am glad I have been able to restrain myself as much as I have. Probably a good thing we don't have a Jo-annes near us. Walgreens is another story. I got (2) 50 x 60in blankets for $8! They have oversize beach towels for $8 each too. I couldn't resist.

Thank you :)

I gave in and went to buy more fleece- they had more of the purple cowprint! I also snagged a grey one and grey leopard print for the ratties.
