I want to make a hay rack for my guinea pig.
I am having trouble trying to figure out what to make it with.
I do not have any grids.
What are some things that are commonly used for hay racks?
The store bought ones I want to try and avoid.
If anyone has and photos they would like to share that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!
:)

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe if you took some wood, covered it with felt, and drilled it onto the cage. That might work. I don't know, I'll try this out for myself and tell you how it works.

The only thing I can think of to make a hay rack with, is exactly what you don't have, grids.

You could try a hay "Box" If you have a old shoe box, or maybe a plastic contiainer that you don't use. You could put hay in that, cut a hole in one side so they can climb in. I have seen some people do that.

In the photo galleries they have a bunch of different ideas. You should check those out. A lot of people use different things from the dollar stores, such as frig. baskets, wire up holders, etc.

I have a store bought one, A shower rack one, and the best that I have come across is putting in there kitchen box on the floor. All the other racks I have to fill several times a day. So I still have the shower rack one and then I put it on the floor for them to eat while they are laying in the box.

You're welcome newpiggymom. It wasn't my idea originally. I saw it in the photo gallery.

Another idea is if you have a soda box that is a "fridge box" like:

Cut it to size you want, turn it upside down so the opening is at the bottom, thread a bread tie at the top to fasten to the cage and fill with hay.

Again, it wasn't my idea but I am glad you like the suggestion.

I was a little skeptical at first because it is a little harder for them to get the hay out than the last one I had, but they manage because I frequently find it empty. I have noticed that they like to put their little paws on it and stand up on their back feet so they can get that piece of hay from the very tip-top of the pile though. So cute, I keep trying to get pictures but I am just not quick enough. And when I sit there with the camera waiting for them to do it, they won't.

I have also noticed that sometimes they will sit there and just pull hay out and throw it down so they have some to play in. Silly piggers.

edited to add: I just saw a featured photo of this that was posted in 05.

I used a painting tool that is used to get excess paint off a roller in a 5 gallon bucket. I just bent it to hold the hay. I think it cost about $1.50 also.
