Pet Store Cruelty

Hey guys, long time no see.

I was wondering what course of action you recommend taking against a pet store owner who neglects his animals?

I ask this because today I visited a local mom 'n pop petstore and went back to look at their guinea pigs (I miss my boys :( ) and they had a C&C cage (2x4) divided in half - 4 pigs on one side, 5 on the other - way overcrowded, I know. One of the pigs on the 4 pig side (a grey & white long haired silky boy like my Harry was) had his ears nearly chewed off, his lip chewed on, and scabbing over sores on his back, and was missing/losing quite a bit of hair on his back. I asked the owner if I could take him to the vet (I offered to pay), because I felt he needed to be treated immediately. The owner said no, he told me he was going to pull him out this evening and his wife would give him a bath and put some "stuff" on him. He said he first noticed it yesterday (!) when a customer asked him what was wrong with that guinea pig. He told me "that black and white one's been pickin' on him". He KNEW that it was going on and for 2 days (at least) left that poor little pig in there to be tortured! :|

I left and immediately called the humane society, they referred me to animal control. I called animal control, explained the situation and they said they would send two officers out to see. I was gone when they called me back, at school and running errands (taking my dog to the vet) so I don't know what happened, but you can bet your erhm butt that I'll be calling back in the morning to find out what happened. If they don't have the resources to take care of him properly I will take him in - I will find a way. Animals shouldn't have to live like that :(

I guess my larger question is this - what kind of action do you take in your community to let other people know about this, to keep an eye on this business, etc. And also, legally, what can they do to this guy? I figure animal cruelty is animal cruelty regardless what type of animal but I would hate for this to fall through the cracks because it's "just a guinea pig". Reply and let me know!

Thanks,
Amy

Well done!

I can't give any advice on what else can be done (I live in the UK and don't know US law)

- I just wanted to congratulate  you:cool: on caring enough to do something about it!

Re: Pet Store Cruelty

Well, I called this morning and spoke with an animal control officer. He said that by the time their guy got over there the owner had already pulled the injured guinea pig out of the cage to treat him. The officer explained to the owner what needed to be done and left the guinea pig there with the owner. :|

I'm not sure I like that. Not much I can do about it though, because now the poor little pig is in the "back room" - I'm not sure I could even get back in there to look at him and make sure he is okay. I should have just offered to buy him yesterday and taken him with me to the vet. Money talks, eh? Hrm. I told the animal control officer that I would be keeping an eye on that guy. They know "that crazy guinea pig lady" is on the case. haha

It sounds a good idea just to buy up all the sick and mistreated pet shop animals, but maybe that just lets the stores off the hook... and gives them room to ship in and mistreat some more animals:|
Given the condition of the poor mite you described you'd have thought that animal welfare would at least have given the store a warning and be keeping a watch on them.
I hope you get to see the little one recover and don't get banned from the store<img src=https://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT="">

Best wishes:D

Hi! I was reading your post and I had to write and tell you that I wish there were more people like you. I'm a huge animal lover and it breaks my heart when I see animals mistreated. Thanks for doing what you did!!! I can't imagine anyone being ugly or letting these innocent precious piggies suffer..God Bless You!:D
