hello everyone
my guinea pigs name is bob.

i received him as a gift bought at a chain pet store. (petco) i love him.
there are times when i have neglected him and times when i have adored him (50/50).

lately ive been worried about his health since it has been good and bad.

im here to expand my knowledge of taking care of bob and to ensure he lives a longer life.

i also plan on raising another GP making that 2.

my name is Jeff but my friends call me skippy.
nice to meet all of you virtually or maybe in person some day :D

Welcome to the forum. Why would you neglet him? Are you unable to devote your time to your guinea pig? It shouldn't be 50/50 it should be 100%. If you are concerned for his health take him to the vet and let him have a check up and make sure everything is ok. I suggest reading the topics at: Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig

If you have questions please ask!

thank you for your concern. its not an issue of me not waiting him in my life. its i get so caught up on school, work, and fun that i dont get home till late to play with him or some days out of a week i cant at all because i fall asleep doing HW at my desk or if there is a group project where i end up falling asleep at my friends house.

but do not worry, i live with my parents and my dad feeds everyday that i dont which is great because he's my life saver... or should i say bob's life saver.

yes im taking bob to the vet this week so rest assure.

I'm sorry if I sounded kind of mean my last post I was just concerned. I understand how you feel I am a college student and I have a job, etc. Anyways a companion sounds like a good idea since you can not always be around him. Just make sure to quarantine the new guy before putting him in with Bob.

Lots of luck!

Welcome to the group! My daughter had the same problem with our piggy, Louise. She was so busy with school, friends, work, etc., that I felt sorry for Louise and moved her downstairs to the family room where she would get attention from the whole family all the time. She has a C&C cage with an open top, so it's easy to give her a pat or snack whenever you walk by, which is all the time since it's by the kitchen doorway. Then I felt she might be lonely when I went back to work, so I adopted another one to keep her company during the day when nobody was home. Now she's alone again, since Sadie died, but she's old and seems to prefer living alone, so I just make sure to give her plenty of floor and lap time. She loves sitting in my lap at night when I watch TV.

Aren't they just the greatest pets? Glad you found this site...you'll learn tons here that will help your piggy live a long and happy life!

Hi Jeff,
Glad you joined a great site. There is a lot of help from others when it comes to our piggies. I know where you are coming from. Our boy got pretty lonely due to all of us (my 2 children, myself and my boyfriend) are always gone during the day. So we did get him a female companion, which made him happy for awhile. Unfortunately Baby passed on so Pepper was lonely again. So about three months ago we bought another girl which we named Precious and let me say that these two are inseperatable. Unfortunately we had to seperate them again because they have been fighting, but their friendship is still strong. But to let you know our lives are very hectic, and it is hard to get around to spending time with them, but like Coopdog posted in his reply, at least giving them a pat and some form of attention they will be fine.

Well, i just took bob to the vet and he wad diagnosed wiht the common mange mite (if it spelled that correct). He is getting his 2 shots of ivermectin (from the vet) and Im currently giving him his medicine twice a day.

He's doing a lot better now. More energetic and playful. :D

I also just finished building my own C&C for him.

What is the medicine twice a day for? Also to make sure Bob is mite free he should be getting a dose of ivermectin every 7-10 days for three consecutive weeks.

The medicine is Baytril.
The next ivermectin shot is scheduled for halloween, exactly 10 days from his 1st shot.

Sounds like your vet found a URI in addition to the mites diagnosis. Normally, an antibiotic (Baytril) isn't needed for mites.

I see.

Either i dont remember him telling me that or I was engulfed at the fact that he had an infection. Because of the mites, he scratches so much that some of this skin comes off and he starts to bleed. Similar to abrasions. I do treat those wounds with Neosporne (if i spelled that right) as i found out from my research here, but it wasnt enough so the vet prescribed Baytril.

Is a URI serious? I like the sound of "infection" better than URI.

Perhaps this is why your vet prescribed the Baytril.

Most pet store pigs come with mites. Which vet did you go to?

He needs more than 2 doses of ivermec, esp. if he is already scratching himself bloody. The min. is 3-4 doses.

I am a bit concerned that bits of his skin are coming off. I am assuming at this point that you are an adult after reading that you took him to a vet. While I am glad to hear that you sought treatment, may I ask why it took so long? If skin was coming off, it sounds as though it should have been taken for treatment much sooner. Quite frankly, it sounds as though you are to busy to properly care for one animal, much less two. Attending what I presume is college, and having "fun" is no excuse for neglect. This poor animal cannot care for itself and thus depends upon you to do it. It is not a toy to be placed upon a shelf until you or your parents (if you are shirking the responsibilty off to them) are able to care for it. You really need to consider your schedule before taking on another pet.
