We have two female guinea pigs that are approximately 5 months old. Has anyone experienced their girls going into season, becoming really really grumpy with one another and also trying to mount each other? We are new-comers to piggies but did heaps of research before we bought them, but must have missed this behaviour. Is there anything we can do to lessen the effects of going into season because with having two girls, we seem to be going from one season to another - they need a referree! Any ideas?

It's not necessarily to do with them being in season, though this can affect their behaviour. They are at the age where they are just post childhood and are working out issues regarding status. Mounting is a dominance issue, and it's completely normal. You will find it will come and go, as the piggy hierarchy changes. Just make sure they have two of everything, particularly food bowls, and this will reduce the chances of scrapping over who gets the food and drink first.

I don't know I have never had any females.

Said it in 1. You might find that 1 girl will do it more than the other

It's all normal behaviors. If you think it's bad with 2, try having a herd of 7 sows and it seems like every 2-3 days someone is in heat or someone is grumpy.
