So yesterday I completely dismantled and threw out my old cage and built a 2.5 foot by 4 foot cage (made with steel mesh and wood framing) which is a bit smaller than my old cage.
But I love space and adding on. My sister has a large dog crate (no wire bottom, the ones with the plastic tray)she's offered me. I believe the distance between bars is an inch, but I'll be measuring after work today. Would it be safe for me to connect the two? If not could I put coroplast around the base up about 10 inches to make it safe?

The dog crate is ok as an add-on. I use one for an emergency travel cage when we have to leave because of hurricanes.

Even without the coroplast it's okay? They'd have access to it everyday so I want to make sure it's safe

Can you describe the dog crate?

The two purposes of coroplast are 1) to provide a waterproof bottom to the cage, and 2) provide a short wall around the bottom of the cage to keep pigs from flinging hay and poop all over the place. That's all. If you've got that covered in your add-on cage, you're fine.

Under 1.3 inches is safe for adult pigs
when in doubt, take a ping pong ball and try to force it through.

You can always block the bars with coroplast if you are worried. It's the same with babyproofing.
