Wash it in hot water, with strong detergent, with bleach, and rinse well.

What are you using for the absorbent layer under the fleece?

Between the fleece? So you have two layers of fleece with pads in between and then another layer under the fleece. That's why. That's too much padding. You just need one layer of fleece and one layer of absorbant. It's not able to wick all the way down because there are too many layers to go through.

To remove odor might washing with some vinegar also help?

Vinegar neutralizes uric acid so it's the best thing to eliminate anything related to urine. Soak it overnight in vinegar, run it through a wash cycle and let it line dry outdoors if you can.

I had this problem after a couple weeks of using fleece, so I'm not sure if it's exactly the same culprit... but someone told me my issue was that ammonia had built up inside the fleece. They told me to put the tiniest bit of blue Dawn dish soap into the washing machine while I washed my blankets (along with the capful of bleach and detergent)... and it worked wonders. After that I ALWAYS put a bit of dish soap in while washing my fleece and towels. For some reason the dish soap breaks down the ammonia.

I on't know how my 4 girls get the fleece so dirty, but I found a cold water rinse with a tiny bit of detergent gets a bunch of stuff out and then I wash in hot. The vinegar and blue Dawn are great solutions too.

Oh, wash in hot with detergent how I usually would go about it. Just added a rinse on the beginning.

Just one more quick q - how much dawn do you use per load? I used 1/4 tsp but wondering if that is too little?

definitely not 1/4 cup of Dawn - you would flood the room with suds, and i think i have hit on the perfect combo - 1/2 tsp Dawn, your regular laundry detergent, and 1/2 cup of Nature's Miracle. Stink free!

What I have always done is use an oxygen cleaner ( generic is fine) and tide free and clear, This removed all smell from my rats hammocks and I plan to do the same with my piggies. I learned this from somehow who use to wash cloth diapers.

Oxyclean, WalMarts sun powder oxy cleaner. Its an oxygen powered cleaner. Best thing is it leaves it with zero odor but also no artificial scents of any kind which is good for sensitive respiratory systems. I even do my dogs laundry like this.

I have found a great combination that works to get the urine smell out of fleece:

*1/2 cup Nature's Miracle (either for cats only or laundry boost)
*1 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid
*usual amount of laundry detergent - i use All free and clear

I just use bleach inside the machine cilinder and regular laundry detergent in the drawer and wash it at 40ºC. Not even the pee pads (that get soaked in urine) have any smell

I don't know about Dawn......I'd probably add a 1/4 cup. Some here on the Forum advise adding Borax to the wash. I have tried it a couple of times and it seems to help. The jury is still out on that one.
QUOTE]
I used borax to remove mildew smell from vintage fabric and it worked very well, but it took 24 hours of soaking to work (I tried smelling it a few times during the process.). Not sure just throwing it in the washing machine would do it.

You are welcome. I just bought some fleece today, and right now I am soaking it in hot water with vinegar, and I might also try to soak it next in water with borax (maybe it helps to take out the chemicals, that make it waterproof.)
