View Full Version : Skin Problems Possible ringworm. Vet? Treat at home?

I brought home two little boars last week. Today I spotted a reddish, crusty, scabby area on the inside of one pig's ear. Doesn't seem acutely itchy or uncomfortable. No spots anywhere else or on the other pig. I hate to drag them out to the vet when they're already skittish from being in a new environment but obviously I will if I need to. I read an article about treating with lotrimin and chlorhexadine at home - should I try that first or just make him an appointment?

You can treat for fungus at home. Lotrimin is one of the creams recommended, the chlorhexidine is not necessary but I can't see why it would hurt. http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html

Just remember to apply sparingly so he can't rub any off and ingest it, also fungal infections are contagious to humans so wash your hands after handling him.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll pick up lotrimin first thing tomorrow morning.

If you treat with chlorhexidine, dilute the heck out of it before doing so. It's really strong and irritating.

Will do. I've used a 1% solution to treat shell rot in turtles before, so I'm aware of how irritating it is. Thanks!
