I feel like an awful piggy mummy. I just found out today Love has entropion. I don't know how I didn't notice before now. Can anyone tell me the chances of him outgrowing it by this age? He's 8 weeks. I can see the hair that's curling upwards and is in his right eye. For now I've put Vaseline on it (the fur, I made sure to not get too close to his eye) to smooth it down so it stops rubbing in his eye.

If he has to have surgery, how long should I expect recovery to take? Will he need to be on his own while he recovers? Also will his cage mates still accept him after a trip to the vet/surgery, or is it best to re-introduce them all? He and Rainbow are pretty tightly bonded. If we separate the two for any reason Love will start wheeking and searching for Rainbow. I hope that makes it more likely that they will still get along if surgery is needed.

As it is not the kind of surgery which requires restricted movement post-op I would leave them together but keep an eye on them to make sure the cage mate isn't bothering the wounds if you do end up going along that route.

Here's some info: http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html#entropion. Sounds like it might correct itself, or possibly only a minor procedure would be needed.

Do you have a good exotic vet lined up?

Not yet, but that's going to be the first thing I do tomorrow.

Soecara thank you for the info, hopefully if he does need surgery his buddies will let him heal. They are all adolescents but so far I've only seen very minor squabbling.

While I'm waiting for him to see a vet, I got him Stye and Thera Tears. Do I give both at the same time? Would it be ok to trim the hair getting in his eye?

Yes, it's ok to trim it, but be very careful around his eye. It'll be a two person job, and you should wrap him like a burrito to make sure he can't jump.

I would thing that one medicine or the other would do. I'd opt for the Thera Tears if it were me.

Thank you for the advice.i tried wrapping him like a burrito last night, but he kept getting one leg out lol. He was patient though and let me put the drops in, I gave him some of his nightly veggies as a 'treat' so I'm hoping he will see the eye drops as a good thing, or at least something to continue to tolerate. ;)
