Hey everyone. To make a long story short, Cuddles, our texel pig, started losing fur and getting pretty aggressive with the other pigs, and her nipples got large and crusty, so we took her to our vet. Turns out she had ovarian cysts, so we had her spayed. Cuddles recovered from that pretty nicely, and her fur started growing back in nice and thick and curly again soon after that.

Well, now it's a couple of months later, and her symptoms seem to be returning. She's losing her fur in pretty much the same patterns, her nipples are bigger, and she's running around mounting the other pigs again. So, how is this happening? She shouldn't even have ovaries, let alone cysts related to them. We plan to take her back to the vet, but can anyone here clear up why this might be happening?

There's such a thing as an incomplete spay, unfortunately, and the cyst(s) can return. That's very rare, however, and may not be the problem here. An ultrasound would show if the cysts are regrowing.

It does sound like a hormonal problem, so if the cysts aren't regrowing, I'm not sure what else could be the cause.

Was your vet experienced in spaying guinea pigs?

This vet is basically THE vet for rodents and rabbits in northeast Ohio. In addition to spaying Cuddles, she's removed a huge cervical lymphadenitis abscess from Kwee's neck, and gotten rid of a benign tumor on our rabbit's back, and spayed her as well.

Even great vets can make mistakes. Perhaps there was a tiny bit of tissue left. Was the uterus and both ovaries completely removed?
