Do guinea pigs have a wonderful sense of smell? It seems like my pigs can smell an orange 63 miles away. Do they also not see very well? Sometimes I think Penelope is blind, but she isn't. Has anyone else made similar observations?

They do have good senses of smell and poor vision. Their eyes are on the sides of their head, so they can't see straight ahead, and have no depth perception at all. It's why you should never put them on an elevated surface, like a table, and leave them there -- they'll walk right off the edge without realizing that there's a steep drop.

Thanks! That would definitely explain why Penelope can't seem to visually find the veggie bowl when I put it in the cage. She walks right past it several times, sniffing the whole time to locate it.
