Stinky fleece and a complaining boyfriend...

Well, this isn't what you asked for, but frankly I wouldn't want to sleep in a bedroom with the piggies either. (My son does, and the smell doesn't bother him, but I think there is always some smell, and whether you can tolerate it or not depends in part on your individual sensitivity to smells...

    Cleaning

In non-piggy instances when I am trying to get rid of urine odors, I use borax in addition to vinegar. Is this safe to use for piggy laundry as well?

    Can I use flannel

If you are talking about using flannel as the layer next to the piggies, I think that would be a bad idea. The special thing about fleece is how it wicks the liquid (pee) away from the piggies, so that they are always on bedding that feels nice and dry. With the flannel, it would stay wet for...

    Bedding question

We use carefresh with nothing underneath (I've heard that using newspaper underneath makes it smell bad faster since newspaper doesn't absorb odors as well as carefresh). We only do a full change every 2 weeks. We have a litter box where they do a good percentage of their peeing and that gets...

    Kiln Dried Bedding

I don't recommend lining the coroplast with newspaper. The newspaper is helpful to prevent the bedding from sliding around. BUT, it is a poor bedding because it smells horrible when it gets wet.

Guinea Pigs and Hammocks, Cuddle Cups etc

Our piggy has and sometimes likes to use a hammock. Just a regular square type. The way it is hung, and the way he uses it, it doesn't bend his back -- he's straight in the middle with the hammock coming up on either side of him.

    Baking soda

I'll second the suggestions to quit using the newspaper, and to use the vinegar to clean the coroplast every time. We keep some diluted vinegar in a spray bottle for this purpose. It shouldn't smell after only a short time with the CareFresh. The other thing I will suggest is a litter box...

What to use for the bottom of my cage?

You need something solid (what would you be putting non-slip drawer liners on top of?) that can be easily cleaned. Just plywood would not be great because it would soak up pee and get gross. Again, fleece blankets or pet bed liners alone would not work -- you need something solid and washable...

    Bedding litterbox project...

If you're only testing on your own guinea pigs, the one thing I would suggest is doing two or more "rounds" of testing the different beddings, in different orders. Then you will see if you are getting an effect that really depends on the different beddings (if the same beddings do well or...

    Bedding litterbox project...

Here are a few issues to consider: 1) I have a feeling that the "best" bedding may be different for different piggies. So what you learn may apply only to your own piggies. 2) Assuming you are going to use the same piggies for all the test conditions, the order of introducing the different...

    keeping the cage bottom covered

We have a 4x2 C&C and we are currently using Carefresh (though we may investigate less expensive options at some point!) My question is: when our little Frisky runs around the cage, she scatters the bedding and ends up with uncovered spots around the cage, and especially in her little hidey...

Using Fleece or Towels for bedding?

Thanks! It sounds to me like the fleece is cheaper but more work than something like carefresh? Does that sound right to folks who have done it? What i mean by more trouble is having to vacuum it out daily. I don't mind having to launder it, but the vacuuming and beating out to get hay out...

Using Fleece or Towels for bedding?

Can someone tell me about the logistics of using fleece or towels for bedding? It sure seems like it would be a lot cheaper than tons of carefresh all the time. How often does it need to be changed/laundered? Thanks!
