    Size Isn't it funny...

Completely agree! When I first got my grids and starting playing around with them I made a 2x3 and thought - wow that is huge! I then made a 2x4 (and promptly got in to get a better feel for it) and was so impressed. I then measured the gap the cage was going in and built the cage to fit it...

C&C Fred and his ladies new set up!

Great cage - especially the hayloft. I love mesh grids!

    Cage Improvising

I'm sorry - I read this post out of pure curiosity but now feel compelled to respond. Some people need to stop behaving like spoilt kids! The original poster stated in the very first post that these pigs were being housed in an indoor pen - INSIDE her house. That they were in the pen only...

    Size Which is better?

I prefer wider cages myself - my cage is 2 1/2 grids wide and I can't imagine making it any narrower. And the 3x5 is bigger, as it is the floor space, ie the "area", that matters. Area is length X width. A 2x6 cage is 12 sq grids of floor space, a 3x5 is 15 sq grids. Imagine laying 3 of...

Cage How Big is Too Big

There is definitely no such thing as "too big" when it comes to animal cages. Even though they are domesticated animals, guinea pigs (like other pets) still retain most of their natural behaviours and needs. To keep them healthy and happy animals should be kept in a spacious - and even more...

C&C My New C&C Cage aka Guinea Pig Estate Phase One

Great cage - can't wait to see how it finishes up! You're making me jealous though - I made the biggest cage I physically could (just over 2.5 x 4) and it still looks small to me. Sadly, the only way to expand it would be to get rid of the freezer and I can't see the family agreeing to that!

I am building an outdoor guinea pig hutch.

Wow - so many things to say I hardly know where to start... 1) England. Many people keep pigs the "traditional" way in a outdoor hutch. All the books, websites, and many rescues advocate this type of housing. That doesn't make it right!! Most of the info available in the UK is the outdated...

    Cage Pet store cage

Okay, let me try to get this straight - hope it makes sense.... On the main page of the GPC website it states that the minimum floor space for 2 pigs is 7.5 sq feet, or a 2x3 c+c. The preferred size is 10.5 sq feet, or a 2x4. The largest commercial cage I have found in the UK is the...

Size Would this be too big for two females?

There is no such thing as "too big" where cages are concerned. I have my 2 girls in a 2.5 x 4 which is the same total floor space as a 2x5. With a couple of hideys, food bowl, toys etc I still think it seems a bit small!

Cage Please I need help providing my Guinea with comfortable space

I don't know if this might help - certainly here in the UK grids are really hard to come by and tend to be expensive but rabbit hutches and runs are everywhere. If you can't find cheap / free grids or coroplast you could look for a rabbit run (not hutch). Look for the type that is a rectangle...

A commercial cage that is big enough?

I looked at these Midwest cags before. I actually think they are pretty good. Personally I wouldn't use any commercial cage for a guinea pig or anything larger - I am totally converted to C+Cs. I found it fairly easy to make. My problem was the cost - I was lucky to get my grids half price...

    New Petstore Cage

Wow - that is really good to see. It's a start at least. I agree that actual c+c cages are best, but I have noticed many people simply can't be bothered to make one and insisit on buying "off the shelf". It would also be good for people who can't find the supplies (would be helpful in the UK...

What should i use as bedding for my c&c cage? Fleece? vet bed? ...

I started off using one layer of fleece over three towels. This was fine, although I wouldn't have used less than 3 because they did get soaked. After getting such good reviews on mattress pads on here I switched. I now use one layer of fleece over one thick mattress pad - and it is much...

Really confused when it comes to this?!! Need CLARIFICATION?

If like me you get confused with measurements, you can do it an easier way. Buy your grids, and put them together to make a 2x4 cage. Lay your sheet of coroplast on the floor and put the grid cage on tope of it (near the middle). On the inside of the grids, draw you lines for scoring the...

    Cage question

Most people have open c+c cages (without lids) as guinea pigs don't tend to be climbers or jumpers, so they are unlikely to escape. I assume you mean you want to keep your pigs sort of free range in the tiled room, with just the grids around them to keep them safe? I think this is a great...

    Advice appreciated please!!!!

Hi to another UKer! The recommended size for 2 girls is a 2x4, so this would be great - certainly much better than any cage you could find in a pet shop. Although, if you do have more space that you would be happy to give up, bigger is always better, so try to make the biggest you can. There...

    Is this cage set-up right?

If you mean it is the type of cage with a solid plastic floor and wire sides (like a giant hamster cage) then it is okay in terms of style. If you meant the floor is wire then no - wire floors can cause pododermatitis (bumblefoot) and broken limbs. However, apparently a 40 gal breeder tank is...

    Television Set?

There is certainly a lot of evidence to suggest that small rodents can be adversely affected by the high frequency noise given off by electrical equipment. It is believed to be because they can hear and communicate by ultrasound - which we humans can not hear. However, I am only aware of this...

    Size of cage

As people have said, the minimum cage size for one or two piggies is 7.5 sq feet (a 2x3 c+c). Females are not so territorial as males, so I would suggest a pair of girls - males generally need a bit more space (a 2x4). Now that I have my cage (2 girls in a 2.5x4) a 2x3 seems small to me - but...

    Couple cage questions

Don't forget you can overlap grids if you use cable ties - my cage is 2.5 grids wide. You could always put the grids together first as a trial run and see how you feel about the width. If you can't reach the back of a 3 grid cage, try 2.5, or stick with 2.
