Okay, hi chat! So, my dad got the Kaytee brand, the gourmet recipe Guinea pig food specifically, and I’m wondering if it’s okay to let my boys have this one brand, usually I use Timmothy (the brand). Should I feed them this bag? Or am I better off just collecting grass and dandelion from my yard??

Definitely not grass and dandelions as their main food, although they're ok as a treat if they haven't been treated with pesticides or fertilizer and if other animals haven't urinated on it.

Guinea pig food has vitamins and minerals that the pigs need. That said, Kaytee is not a very good brand -- your pigs are far better off with Oxbow.

I don't see a Kaytee gourmet formulation of guinea pig food. Are you in the U.S.?

Pigs under six months need a food that is primarily alfalfa hay, pigs over six months need primarily timothy. Good GP food will have a calcium source that is NOT limestone (calcium carbonate). It should also have stabilized vitamin C added. And you should also be giving veggies with vitamin C -- bell pepper is an excellent source.

I’m in Nova Scotia. And I had told my dad that they can’t have seeds(this food has many seeds, corn and even peas.) but he said the company knows best, which is dumb, and we won’t buy any more Guinea pig food until this bag is gone, I just want to make sure it’s okay before following through, they’re both a bit over a year old.

You can explain to your father that the company does NOT know best, and in this particular case are merely out to make a buck. You can do some research, especially here and present your findings while explaining to him the importance of responsible pet parenting.

In all seriousness, Kaytee is garbage. If he insists that you feed your pet such a terrible diet, make sure you pick out anything that isn't healthy. Seeds and corn especially, peas are ok. Pigs can choke to death on seeds of any sort. Mainly you should be left with pellets.

Noted, I’ll sort through that trash bag they call food tonight!!
And as far as @bpatters suggested, Oxbow brand is among the best you can get from a pet food store, and definitely accessible in Nova Scotia. I live in Ontario and its easily accessible here, and even Amazon.ca carries a plethora of Oxbow products.

Just as an aside, I applaud you for doing research for your furbabies, and wanting to do the right thing for them. Obviously I don't know your age and don't need to, but most young ones wouldn't give it a second thought. So Kudos to you!

Always very carefully read the ingredients list on any treats you Buy! The place I buy my food, the treats they stock have terrible ingredients. I only buy things WITHOUT UNNATURAL DYES and which have things that are not poisonous for them. Make sure to do plenty of research on what food guinea pigs can and can't eat!!
