I don't like that it is so open to preditors. I wouldn't feel safe putting my pigs in there.

Hey thanks, yeah luckily we dont have any problems with predators of any kind, the yard is fully fenced so safe from dogs and none of our neighbours have cats (mine would chase them away anyway!) We have had them like this for four years with no probs at all

Is this just a play yard or full time accomodation?

Hi ya, yes thats my cat on the cage, our piggie guardian, she has grown up with them and they adore her as she does them.
There is no way i would have them like this if i was the least bit concerned about her! The older guinea pigs come in at night, but it is their full time home. We move it around the yard as the grass gets eaten down, and change their toys and houses too, they love it and its great to be able to watch them graze and sleep in the shade and hang out and do guinea pig things. We are home most of the day so get to watch them for hours.

Thanks, we are lucky we dont have any around as we live in a relatively urban area. We only have hawks in NZ, and they stay out in the rural areas.

HHmmm outdoor piggies. So they are out there in that open top run night and day with I am guessing not 24 hour human supervision. Sorry nice thought, glad you tried and all that but that is way too risky. Bring the pigs inside.
On a side note I do not think this picture shows an ideal environment for piggies full time accomodation. maybe read the information listed here http://www.cavycages.com/location.htm

Thanks for your thoughts.
The environment here is quite different to America, we have hardly any predatory animals, the climate is moderate (not to hot and not to cold). If it does get cold the pigs come inside, but they would hate being inside fulltime. Just watching them on the grass in this way, they love it. They can graze when they want, sleep where they want, get shade or bask in the sun when they want, they never get bored and can see all the goings on of us doing the gardening and so on.
Sure no one can be keeping an eye on their pig 24 hours, but we spend a good part of the day and evenings with them, and like I said, have had them this way for over four years now with them only reaping benefits over those kept in hutches.
I appreciate things are very different climate and predator wise in America and other vountries, I feel pretty lucky that my pigs can live in a safe outdoor environment and enjoy themselves.

You've just been lucky for four years. I sincerely hope you continue to be lucky. We have very temperate climates in certain parts of the US as well, and nowhere would we recommend keeping them outdoors in such a setup. And predators come in many forms. Again, I hope you luck holds out.
