I'm new here, and had no clue that I was going to tick people off right off the bat! I understand how you feel about breeders....certain ones, anyway...but, what about people that love pigs and have a few now and again to sell? I feel like I got slapped for even mentioning a 'breeder'...although, that's probably the wrong word anyway...(see last post)I looked high and low for cavies to adopt in my area...there aren't any! People selling or giving away in classified ads? Nope. Shelters? None to be had...Pet shops that get their animals from companies that mass produce...not an option...so, it was go without or find someone decent who loves their animals and only provides the best, loving care...which is what I did. I'm going to take very good care of my babies...they have a huge cage, an entire room to play in...almost a whole house that they can roam, and they also will have an outdoor run to play in when the weather is nice, not to mention all the toys and a delicious diet to boot, not to mention a ton of love and affection! Isn't what's important taking care of and commiting to the animals' well being, reguardless of where they came from? My pets will live large with me, and only have the best of everything...I'm not one of those who condones mass breeding of any animal, and when I commit to a pet, it's for LIFE....lighten up my friends! Please!:sorry: |

I don't think you really ticked people off. It's more that this site is anti-breeding. There are thousands of pigs sitting in shelters/rescues waiting for home and those pigs desperately need homes. There is such a huge overpopulation of guinea pigs already that more don't need to be added. You said there aren't guinea pigs to adopt in your area but the members have shown on both threads that there are pigs within an hour of you to adopt. I think you just need to take some time and read to see what this forum is all about. Then you will understand why we feel the way we do. |

You didn't tick me off! And in no way did anyone ever accuse you of potentially not being a good owner. People were just trying to open up your eyes to breeding and problems it causes. There is absolutely no reason to take it personally other than to do what you want with the information and maybe find more information on this site. You might then understand why we feel the way we do. |

You certainly did not tick me off. And, like Peggysu said, no one in any way accused you of not being a good owner. And no one was/is being mean at all. Everyone who replied was being very nice. |

Just a short note to thank you for the adoptable guineas in Raleigh! I didn't know about them, and they're only an hour away! I've already committed to the four sows I'm getting, but if all works out, I might adopt a couple more females now that I know where to get them. Thanks for the info! |

There are always needy pigs near you 99 percent of the time. You obviously didn't look hard enough. Buying from breeders when there are homeless pets is not a good idea. Backyard breeders are often worse than pet mills. |

You didn't tick me off...I hope I didn't tick you off with my post, I tried to make sure that I kept it polite, I've been working on that! ;) Homeless pigs are everywhere-if you look hard enough, you can find them in almost every city where there's a pet store. Are you 100% committed to those sows? I don't mean to sound pushy or rude, but those pigs have a better chance of getting good homes than the ones sitting at an overcrowded rescue where they have a pretty big chance of being euthanized. If possible, I would break that commitment and save some lives instead. |

Ditto. If you haven't taken possession of the breeder pigs or given her any money, then don't. Go adopt and save a life. Don't encourage the breeder. |

I also wasn't trying to be rude. I just thought you might want a few more options to consider. But I do wish you all the luck. I to bought one piggie, but then realized what I did and ended up rescuing 3. And out of all 4 of my piggies the one I bought is the only one who has ended up getting sick. So there is always more to consider. So I to recommend adoption or rescuing over buying. Hope you learn alot from the site like I have. I am constantly learning something new from here. |

Oh, and on a side note organicsab, I thought you had decided this site and its members were so wretched and awful that you wouldn't be back? [http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ridiculus.html ] I guess maybe what you meant to say was you'd come back if you felt there was an opportunity to let us know how horrible you think everything and everyone is here? Good to hear you are giving the rescue a go. But I do want to try to explain why people react as they do: First, most of us are passionate about guinea pigs. These little guys give us so much pleasure and enjoyment and for this, among other reasons, I feel we owe them a good home that meets their needs. I am honest enough to admit that I've made many mistakes, some my own fault because I thought I knew better than the experts and others caused through getting bad information from pet stores etc. So now when a person more experienced than I takes the time to educate me, I listen. Especially as doing so helped save the life of one of my cavies very recently. This is the busiest cavy forum I have ever seen and so many people are so willing to help because we all love cavies so much! Were it not for the odd bit of straight talking from people on here, then my guinea pigs would still be eating unsuitable food and suffering outside in a hutch in freezing conditions (or dead from predators or the weather). I, in turn, hope I am able to help other mistreated guinea pigs escape from their plight. I am certainly not here to be popular; if I can make a few friends while here then great but my main concern is getting the right information out there to stop the abuse of these wonderful creatures. Which takes me to my next point: This is an anti-breeder site and as such any post that is pro-breeding is unlikely to end well. It is not that we want to slap anybody down or enjoy giving people a hard time, it is just that many of us have seen and heard of some terrible things that happen due to guinea pigs being treated as production units or cash cows. To this end, there have recently been quite a few new people on here pushing a certain agenda about breeding. In the face of this deluge, it becomes harder to avoid feeling sceptical about these peoples' intentions. In summary, we can get a bit exuberant or abrasive because we care so much! Surely people who are this caring are better people to take advice from than those whose sole concern is how many animals they sell in a month? Am I right or wrong? As an aside, can I also give you a bit of advice about posting? A wall of text with bad punctuation is hard to read and can lead people to misread your intentions. You could maybe save yourself some trouble by making your posts more readable by dividing them up into paragraphs. I am trying to help out here so I hope you receive this post in the spirit I intended. |
