Exclamation Nevermind on the Intro

I'm leaving this place. I tried to introduce myself and be friendly and all I got was people criticizing me and jumping to conclusions. You can't give advice to people if your going to be so rude about it. Instead of telling me that someone gave me the guinea pigs at too young of an age why don't you instead suggest a way that I can better take care of them?

I can do my own research. I don't need "advice" from people who have their nose this high in the sky.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

Weigh them daily with a kitchen scale Guinea Lynx :: Weigh Weekly! and feed them alfalfa hay and alfalfa based pellets. Read over that website very carefully.

And tell whoever you got these babies from to make sure they do not give any more away unweaned. They should still be with mom another week.

And make sure they are both females : Guinea Lynx :: Sexing Pups

I meant what I said about reading up about Satins. They have health issues.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

That was nicer. I sincerely thank you for that.

The lady I got them from told me that it was a large litter and the mother was losing condition. I was on a waiting list for these and didn't expect her call for another week (which is what she told me.) I think she understands that they should be with the mother for three weeks - is it really a possibility that there can be such a big litter and some need to go in order to save the mother's health?

I've already refreshed my memory of sexing babies and am 99% sure that they're both females.

And I will research the satin thing. I had never heard much about those genetic problems when my mother and I raised them (I'm guessing that info wasn't as commonly known 11 years ago!)

Thank you again for the help.

I hope you don't think that I'm unwilling to take care of my pets. I was just appalled at having everyone tell me the same criticism over and over.

First of, no one except you was being rude. Taking a piggie away from his mom too soon is the same thing as taking a kitten or puppy away from his mother at too young of an age. We are not blaming you for having piggies that are still too young to be spereated, just informing you. We are blaming the person you got them from for not taking care of their litter.

And it's not that we don't think kids can't have pets AT ALL. Pleantly of members here have kids as well as pets. What we mean by that is that it should not be the child's pet in that they are solely responsible for caring for it until they are mature enough. We have found that people indulge their children by buying them small animals thinking they won't be much work. After a few weeks, the novelty wears off and usually the kids lose interest. Then, since the parents see it as the child's pet they don't want to take care of it so they just dump them.

If instead you get an animal and call it a family pet, then everyone is responsible for it.

I also had piggies when I was a kid, so I know where you are coming from. But looking back on it I realized that while I always loved my piggies, no 5-8 year old can really be expected to care for an animal like it deserves to be cared for. Kids don't fully understand how important it is to feed, water, clean, handle them EVERYDAY. I remember some days I did care for my pig, but most of the responsiblity fell on my mother.

I truly hope you reconsider you stay here. It's a wonderful place full of useful, correct information.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

Well, it seems that you saw the last post, so maybe mine is a bit harsh.

I do want to say though that no one was bashing you about having young babies, just informing you.

The reason multiple people say the same thing over and over is because sometimes ( I don't know why, I know I usually don't) just read the first post, and don't see what everyone else says. Also, we are very passionate about our piggies and want to ensure that every one of them gets the best care, by telling our members how important certain thing are, which believe me, can take multiple statements of the same thing to make it sink in sometimes.

I'm still not convinced to stay here. I think people are too quick to jump to conclusions. I may come and have a look around on occasion but I'd rather not be a part of the conversation.

Then don't be. That decision is entirely up to you.

Like everywhere, people here have different opinions and views ... and different ways of expressing those opinions and views. If you're likely to be offended by someone expressing a viewpoint or opinion that differs from yours, or in a way you don't feel is "fair" then it may be best for you just to read and learn as much as you can without getting directly involved.

There is so much valuable information on this site, you and your pigs will benefit greatly from you reading and learning from all that's available here. You don't have to contribute to the threads to learn from them ... and you surely don't have to post a rant telling us how "rude" we are to prove anything.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

Your intro thread replies seem to be about typical of how people respond around here. I think it's totally up to you what kind of communication styles you prefer in a forum and whether or not this forum is a "match" for you. It doesn't have to mean that this site is "wrong", it just may be not your cup of tea.

I think there are some people here who are just very to-the-point and have a no frills style of posting and that can falsely be interpreted as rude when they are truly trying to offer help. On the other hand, there are other people who I think actually are quite rude and just use the guise of being "to-the-point".

Overall for me, the good posts outweigh the bad. You can decide for yourself how you see it. But I agree with Paula, I don't see why you need to start a thread about it. When I've visited forums I've not liked, I just left quietly and found another forum more to my liking.

I'm afraid she doesn't understand that if she's let them go that young. If it's a big litter then it's as simple as she should have monitored their weight until they were old enough to go, supplementing them by handfeeding if the mother was having trouble feeding them all.

I would have a look around the site at some of the "new members read me" type posts. Many, many people here are involved with rescuing pigs and unfortunately come across pigs seperated too young, satin guinea pigs with osteodystrophy and other sorts of colourful problems day in day out. They know what they're talking about and their primary concern is the health of the guinea pigs, not coating posts in fluffs and cuddles in the event that the hard facts they write may or may not offend the animal's owner.

If you want to leave the site, go. No one is going to criticize you for the decisions you make. But I do hope that you carry over some of the knowledge you have gained from your short time being here, to your future care of guinea pigs.

Every one has a different view towards everything.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

Its your decision whether you want to leave or stay with this forum. We simply are here to offer you the best possible advice for your pigs. How you take that advice is up to you. Not everyone agrees with the exact same things-imagine how boring the world would be if we did. It's our job to take the differing opinions and study them. They often aren't that far from our own opinions. Many people on this site have spent years studying cavies and their diets and behaviors and are often more knowledgable than some vets. Their advice is trustworthy and very well informed.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

Well, I thought some of others here are just trying to help.

I take many advice here like going to the doctor, they just give you the facts. Facts can & do hurt sometimes (eg. like you have cancer & really should not be still eating this etc..). But it is up to us how we digest the news. :)

Many advices here are given because they are actual researches that has been experimented (through trails & errors) & proven with scientific researches. So I think they are not meant to be snobby.

Guniea pigs aren't named "guinea pigs" for nothing... they were used in some countries (some country that do not care for the animals "am not going to name names") still for "tests". If fact, GPs do have very similar to human illnesses / responses which is why researches use them to test drugs, cosmetics etc. But also through these tests that is done on GPs & researching their behavious that "we humans" also learn what is & what is not good for GPs (thus developing the studies of health/diet/environment/behaviours of GPs).

Which is why in many of these forums, it is not just (normal people & animal lovers) who loves their pets that frequent here... many of them could be vets, scientists (who fell in love with the GPs), researchers & people who are just cavy obsessed hence make cavy their life studies that frequent here.

Just like a husband... you would want your hubby to know how to love you rather than just "saying" he love you but actually do not really know how to love you, right?

So with information & knowledge of any kind is actually much of a blessings... it is what differenciate us from out dearly dependent piggies (but they really have us well trained mind you in their own ways)... that out piggies can depend on us... to learn more about them (from them), to show them love in the best possible way & knowledge (definitely a plus).

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

I read the thread and am not sure what exactly you are referring to as some being rude, or arrogant.

I do know this, you won't find a better GP forum for *correct* care and information out there. It would be in your GPs best interest to stick around and glean all the information you can from here. Yes, there are many passionate people here, it's not a bad thing though.

When I first started visiting and reading (before ever joining as a member) some of the posts seemed harsh to me. However, instead of getting upset and leaving, I decided to find out what exactly the bigger picture was. I learned about why breeding and pet stores are such sensitive subjects. I learned why false information can be so dangerous. I learned that adoption/rescue is the only way to go. I learned that to run such an informational site, most posts are to the point and you won't see many smilies running around (Still hard to refrain from using them myself!).

I hope that you will see that no one was attacking you.

Please, reconsider. This is the best GP site you will find on the web.
We on this site, are very passionate on how we feel about GP's. We can come off strong but give us a chance we will grow on you.
When I first joined I set something about 4-H and breeding. (I didn't read all the threads first) Boy, did I get it! But, I stayed, read and learned. I did not regeret it. Three and a half years later I am still here.
So stick around and ask questions. They will be answered and you will not regret it either.

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

I have only been here for a short time, and I want to say I know where you're coming from. but I can't because I know How much I truly Love my furkids. I have two males. They are my inspiration. They are and have become my life. I've never been so contented. I know sometimes things can get heated. For example. I had posted something of the sort about my Piggies litter pans, and got jumped on about there being wood in their cage. And trust me it was temporary, but I didn't expect them to know that. And the kicker of it was Is there are several people in here with wooden cages, I don't object to it. If everything is properly cleaned.

I found this site one day just browsing through the internet looking for new cage ideas. and I found it. I've been in love since. I will have to admit, I have gotten thick skinned since I've joined. But the information...you just can't find anywhere else. I understand that it can be irritating. And I do feel for you. I just hope that you know that if you want some of the best advice ever found then this is the site for you. Sometimes you don't even need to post new threads about things because You can always look at the older ones.

I'm not going to sit here and convince you to stay but I want you to do the best for your beautiful girls. And be happy! I understand everyone has different ways. i am actually one of the "to the point" people but I really think that all you could use is some guidance.

I'm Glad to have met you, and That I really hope that I have helped. And No matter what your choice is. I hope you do the best for you and your girls!

Re: Nevermind on the Intro

I read that intro thread, and it didn't look like anyone was being rude to me. Most of the people who do this, are way to easily offended. I honestly get tired of people posting threads saying they are leaving, and arguing with people in that thread, if you don't like the forum for whatever reason and you are going to leave, LEAVE! Don't stay on and pick fights.
You also have to understand that a lot of people have been on this board for a long time, and have seen these things time, after time, after time again. Yes sometimes people jump to conclusions, but hey, you have probably jumped to a conclusion at least once in your life to, the fact is we're human.
