EMAIL Address lock-down

Sorry people, but because of the idiots at the frog forum, I'm tightening down on generic emails. If you use hotmail, yahoo, gmail or msn---too bad. New members are going to have register with a legit email. If another service is used that is easy to get, that will be banned, too.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

Sorry you're going through this! What a pain! Will those of us with existing memberships and that sort of email address be effected, or is this just for new people registering?

Just for new people registered and if for some reason you wanted to change your email address.

Yeah. It's not like I don't have anything better to do. Unlike some people.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

CavySpirit would this affect me since I registered in March? I do have another university provided email address that I can use. Please let me know if I need to switch to that email, I'd be happy to.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

Okay. I've changed the policy. Those emails can now be registered.

HOWEVER, all new registrants are now put into a user group called "Probie" and all their posts are moderated.

IF we see that they registered with a REAL email address, then they will be moved by a moderator into Newbie status. IF they register with a yahoo, gmail, msn, etc. email, their posts will remain as moderated until we see that they are NOT trolls or spammers.

So, if someone really, really wants to troll our forum, they are going to have to work damn hard at it and it's going to take time. Then, their butts will be immediately banned on any trolling post and they'll have to start all over again!

It's too bad we have to stoop to the level of dealing with these blowhards, but at least we can!

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

No. ALL existing Newbie members were actually moved into a new Newbie group. I then changed the old Newbie group to the Probie group--if that makes any sense.

Only new registrants after tonight will start out in the Probie group.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

I think she just means, emails you can sign up for in less than 30 seconds.

Basically you can go on yahoo, msn, or gmail, make your own new email and be up and running in about 2 minutes. And if that email is only for spam, and trolling other forums, or your real email got blocked they can switch to that to continue spamming. So because of ease of creation its real easy for trolls to just make a new email, and then register as a "new" user, who just happens to support the old banned user. (Sometimes they forget adminstrators can see their IP address to)

This would be opposed to like a work email, which is run by your work server and generally can't be created by just anyone.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

Thanks for this extra layer of protection from trolls! I use gmail (and only gmail for non-work emails since my work insists we not receive any external email) but if I were just signing up I know I wouldn't mind a probie period, and surely the real users that come here won't mind either!

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

Out of curiosity, can people put into the "Probie" category that by buying a Cavy Star or Cavy Champion subscription? Not that I think a person signing up just to troll would be interested in shelling out any cashola to do it, but I'm just curious if they could, or if a person who really wanted a way around the tentative status could get around it, like Newbies can.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

Whether from work or from home, when you first sign up with an Internet Provider, you get an email that assigned to you. From there, you can create as many email identities as you want. But, I'm looking for the emails that are tied to a specific account. Like joeblow@sbcglobal.net. Or teresa@cavyspirit.com - which has a reportable Internet Provider.

Once in a while I get Newbies signing up as Stars or Champions. I don't get that many, so I don't really want to discourage it. And with Probies, if they sign up, their email with paypal has to be legit, so I'm not worried about that part.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

I didn't mean to discourage the Star or Champion subscriptions in any way, I just wondered if a person really motivated to stir up trouble still in the "Probie" category could buy a membership to get around having their posts moderated.

I suppose, though, they could always pay the fee, start to troll, and get banned just the same, eh?

I think it is a GREAT idea, by the way, and hopefully will save you guys some headaches with these hoodlums.

Re: EMAIL Address lock-down

No worries. I don't think any self-respecting troll is going to risk their paypal account or give anyone that much accountability. The whole point of trolling is to be anonymous so that you can live to troll another day!

And yup, the ban button works on all usergroups!

I was just about to ask what made them not *real* myself.
That explains it. Thanks.

I call them generic email addresses when they don't come from your internet service provider.
