Pescetarian...........>< Does anybody know what the point of that is? I'm just curious why fish don't get to be spared....That gets on my nerves a little tiny bit......I am an omnivore (soon to be vegetarian, because I just received PETA's free vegetarian starter kit magazine), except for the fact that I have always and will continue to always refuse to eat fish and all forms of seafood. I would rather miss a meal than eat seafood, personally. And I think all animals are equal, but the reason I do not eat any seafood is because it all tastes revolting to me. The smell of fish makes me want to throw up. |

It bugs me too, sophistacavy. My brother keeps telling me fish is not meat. Umm....Hello! It is an ANIMAL too, what makes it any less meat than beef or chicken? |

Maybe because fish aren't mammals? I don't get it either. (Generally speaking...dolphins are mammals but who would eat Flipper?) |

It doesn't make any sense to criticize pescatarians any more than it makes sense to criticize vegetarians for not being vegans. For many people it is a step towards becoming a vegetarian. It can be easier to eliminate one type of meat first and then others and to make the transition gradually. For other people it is the best way to meet their nutritional needs while still trying to avoid meat to a large degree. Vegetarians still eat eggs and dairy products. It doesn't make sense to criticize them for not caring about the conditions those animals live in--they too are trying to minimize exploitation of animals but in a way that they will be able to stick with. It's a balance between what is practical and what people feel is most ethical. |

Absolutely, akstrohm. I'm an omnivore with no intention of ever being anything else but I can certainly see there being principled reasons for reducing or eliminating consumption of whole classes of proteins from one's diet if one chooses to make that commitment. It sounds as if certain people are assuming that discomfort with consumption of animals is the only reason one would become a vegan or vegetarian, and it just isn't so. I can see people being willing to eat fish but not beef, for instance, because fishing doesn't cause the massive deforestation that cattle ranching can, and some species of fish are nearly exclusively wild-caught, having lived their whole lives in a natural environment, rather than in a cage, which may matter to some people also. |

I'd just like to point out it doesn't matter to me why people eat what they eat. The mammals thing is a thought. |

And for others, it could be that they aren't mammals, but following that logic would also mean it would be okay for them to eat chicken and turkey. So who knows? It is a step in the direction toward eating less meat and is a commendable choice regardless of the individual's reasoning for it, I think. |

Paula, thats exactly what I was trying to say before (the other post)! Quote:
On another note, I once asked a friend who ate fish but no other meat why she thought it was okay to eat fish. Her answer was that fish weren't "cute and cuddly", so its was "fine to eat them because they don't really do much". I wholeheartedly disagree, but that was her reasoning. |

I don't think I could ever be a vegetarian. I've considered it, but I like the taste of fish too much and I don't like many veggies or meat substitutes at all. My brother calls me a non-chickaterian because I don't eat any chicken. I can't stand the taste of it. |

My grandma is a vegetarian, she eats veggies, fruit, and beans, no meat at all, meaning no eggs, milk, fish, or chicken. But, she has never tried to push her preferenses on her kids or anyone and all her kids and some of her grandkids are meat eaters. I am picky when it comes to meat. For me it's only fruits and veggies with a few meat. No seafood, very little other meat. My mother said I inherited most of my grandmas tendancies for food just as my youngest son did. Most meat just don't taste good to me. Food is a preference/ choice that I honestly think is based more on taste. |
