Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I'm trying to get some info on the safety of peanut butter and having very little luck. Some sites say it contains a carcinogen, but other sites say it's not an issue. So, I figured if anyone would know about it, it would be someone on a vegetarian forum. I love peanut butter. I eat it almost every day for lunch with an apple, and I eat alot of it...probably 3-4 tablespoons worth. I buy the supermarket brand (the organic stuff is just too gritty and sticky for me), and I've been eating it for years. I find it very satisfying, and it really sticks by me better than most other things I eat. Weight is not an issue for me, since I've always been thin and haven't gained any weight since I started my PB lunch routine. My main concern then, is the whole carcinogen matter. I just stumbled on it today, and it kind of freaked me out. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated! Thanx! |

I have never, ever heard that before. I eat a ton of PB, too. |

I've never heard of Carcinogen. I'm guessing it's something bad? The only problem about peanut butter (that i've heard of) is the insects that get processed into it. |

Well, if there are cancer-causing agents in peanut butter, it may be because of the bug-chemicals used? |

Actually, it's due to a mold found in peanuts called Aspergillus flavus. Some sources say it falls well under the danger levels, others say it's questionable. |

I have never in my life heard that before. Personally, it sounds to me like someone with not enough to do made that up just to have something to do. That sounds ridiculous. If it were true, I'm sure something would've been said about it already like waaaaaaay long ago. You should ask a professional. I don't know what kind of professional, maybe a nutritionist, organic farmer, any kind of farmer. Maybe a peanut farmer website xD Good luck! I'm going to go look up some stuff to see if I can help here some. |

Peanuts, as a crop, are highly susceptible to a mold that produces a carcinogen called aflatoxins. Besides that, peanuts are one of the most pesticide-contaminated crops in the US. |

Oh ok. Wow. So eating organic peanut butter would be the safest bet then. I'll look into how much it costs in my local grocery store, or my local earthfare or greenlife if the grocery store doesn't have it. |

I'm not sure that pesticides are really an issue, since the shell is removed prior to processing. |
