Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Isn't it so annoying when you tell people that you are a vegetarian or a vegan and they come back at you saying that its unhealthy/ you NEED meat/ you will die younger/ you will need to take tons of pills. They are just some of the comments I have got. Also when I try and tell them why its healthier to be vegetarian they just kind of 'fight to right' if you know what I mean. I tell them on average vegetarians live 7 or something years longer and I just get them becoming really annoyed at me for some reason. Also for some reason I always get told that I eat fish. I can't remember how many times I have said 'thats a pescetarian'. Sometimes I even get back 'Oh they have names or did you just make them up' ![]() Another thing is when I was out with my friend and her brother they wanted to go to McDonalds so I went with them. I told them I didn't want anything (since I very much dislike McDonalds) they started joking about it, offering me double beef burgers and ckicken supremes and what not. I know they were only joking but they really annoyed me, they think they are the first joke about it when they are most certainly not. |

My brothers (and sometimes my sisters) do it to me all the time. For example, one of my siblings (can't remember which) held some meat in my face one time and said "Ooh! I know you want some!" and if we go to Mcdonalds or somewhere like that, they will tease me sometimes to. It is rather annoying, but I can ignore it and it doesn't bother me unless they're holding it in my face, then I shove them away and tell them to knock it off. My dad sometimes teases me to. |

I used to be a vegetarian and my my parents always hated it. Now everytime my father sees me eat meat he goes, now aren't you happy you eat meat again?! I want to punch him. I honestly don't know why I gave it up since I often still wish that I was. |

I really hate myself for my lack of self control when it comes to burgers and bacon...so I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat nearly as much as I used to. Even so, I get teased for not eating most red meats, which isn't even close to what I should be doing. |

I hate when people do that. When I was making mini veggie burgers for my kids party my brother walked up and put this big old disgusting piece of meat right on the grill and I almost whacked him with my spatula. |

My family HATES the fact I'm a veggie head. My brother actually tried to shove a peice of turkey down my throat. I've heard them plotting to put beef in my brownie, calling me all the names imaginable, and telling my friends that vegans look down on me. The more you ignore them the less and less frequent they come. [Edit] Starshine, it's never to late! |

I completely agree that it's wrong that vegetarians don't get the respect deserved when they tell people their choices. I honestly am not sold on the idea that there is a clear winner of the argument here. Indeed it seems that today's vegetarians can be slightly healthier because of the vast (and quite sickening) industrialization of the meat and poultry industry and whatever substances they are injecting into the foods we eat. However, you could also say that unless you are eating completely organic (whether it be meat or produce), it is virtually impossible to be clear of all sorts of toxicants that people treat our food with. I myself was raised on a "meat and potatoes" kind of diet, so I'll actually have physical cravings for it (or what my taste buds call the delicious salty goodness of nitrites and other salty chemicals) if I go long enough periods without it. Maybe someday I'll try some fake meats and see how it goes. |

That gets so on my nerves. At the shop we have a customer that absolutely loves to hunt. each time he comes in (in full hunting gear might I add) he tries his hardest to nag me about being a vegetarian, last week I was so annoyed at him (he purposfully) sat near me and started talking about killing killing deer! I blew it A) deosn't bother me anymore B) will never talk about killing deer in my shop any more. Although i do feel sorry for his daughter, she's a vegetarian . Some people just don't have any respect for people that have different views from themselves. |

I've been a vegetarian for years and my Dad, a hard-core mountain man who eats TONS of beef, thinks it's absolutely hilarious. I myself don't eat fish, which only brings more taunts. I have many siblings, most of which share the same views as my father, and all of them think I'm insane. Basically I've turned into the family weirdo. I find it funny, honestly. While I think us vegetarians should get respect (we are quite good at self-control) some situations I find myself in with ignorant people can be rather funny. Yes, either ignoring or laughing at them solves it quickly. |

I think people who make fun of people who are vegetarians/vegans are retards, and they need to go live in a slaughterhouse or at least work there for a year or so, and then they can come back and then everyone they made fun of can see how they feel about it then. |

I don't appreciate people being rude or cruel about it, but joking around doesn't bother me. My husband has a big nose and lots of his friends and family make jokes about it- including me and him! You really need to have a sense of humor in life. |

People used to joke with me alot, I didn't really mind it. What really bugged me was when people used to say well then why do you eat eggs or milk. And those people would be sitting there eating meat still while questioning me why I'm not vegan. |

I have been a vegetarian for a year and my family jokes about it and some friends. It gets on my nerves. The most annoying thing to me is when people ask why. To me, it just clicked in my brain as common sense and the best use of my life. It was just seemed like the right thing to do. So, they are expecting a concrete answer, like morals, taste, health, etc. and I don't have an answer to give them. So I just end up shrugging my shoulders and saying that I don't know. It's really awkward and I didn't tell anyone out of my family for over 6 months because of it. |

In my Human Bio class, it says in our books that the human anatomy is meant to eat plants, but since we can digest meat, we eat it, but we don't need to! We only need Protein and Iron and a few other things from meat, but it's not like we can't get it from somewhere else that's non-flesh. Some people are just too pig headed to understand this. |

I am not a vegetarian but I also get annoyed when people joke about vegetarians. I have a lot of respect for vegetarians and vegans. When I was at school this girl and her friend were talking and one said, "We are meant to eat meat, that's how God made us." I was sitting there thinking, where did you get that idea from!!! Gordon Ramsey gets on my nerves with what he says about them aswell. |

As far as having a concrete reason when asked, just say it's a decision you made and it feels like the best choice for you. I have told people that I just decided to do it. I don't give animal rights lectures or go into all of the good environmental reasons for it. It's a personal choice and that's a good enough explanation. |

For my concrete answer I just say because it doesn't feel right eating a pig or a cow knowing you could've once knew that animal (if you knew why I was a veggetarian(now vegan WHOUGH!) you'd understand it better) |
