Ok so I've been a vegatarian for 7 months. Last night at dinner my dad said he read something interesting about being a vegetariann. Well my dads memory isn't what it used to be. So when He told me what he couldn't quite remember. He said it was something to do with lack of protien which makes for a deprived brain....He though. Well it was something that wasn't good. My first thought was it was one of those dumb myths. Then my paranoid side of me got to thinking. So I was wondering if anyone knew what it could be or if it was just another myth. If it isn't another myth what can prevent it? Also, it kinda urked me that they would put something negative about being a vegatarian. I mean all us veggie heads do is good! There are proteins we can't get from a vegetarian diet, but we can get pretty close. We need our omegas. Although Fish oils are the best source. Flaxseed is the best vegetarian option. |

Here is a good article for the vitamins that are important for vegetarians to keep track of http://www.weightlossnutrition.org/a...etarian-diets/ Here is a lot of stuff about the omegas, I'll see if I can find a better article...it has lots of organic chemistry, so skip to the part of the article that goes over the sources of the omegas, that is the most useful, and the chemistry, although informative, isn't needed to cover the bases. omega 3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-3_fatty_acid and omega 6 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-6_fatty_acid This helps for the protein sources http://www.happycow.net/vegetarian_protein.html Just for fun: http://www.mayoclinic.com/popupnowra...d=display_full And the source of just for fun: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/veg...n-diet/HQ01596 And finally, after we hit puberty, the human brain goes through a shrinking process. Our frontal does still have developing to do after this time up to 22-25 years of age. In the normal american diet, we get too much omega 6 and not enough of 3. Flaxseed has a good ratio of omega 3. (4:1) It is unlikely, but should you isolate yourself from other sources of omega 6, you would need to also add oils that contain more omega 6 as well. I agree scientists are wrong about a lot of things. And honestly you have been a vegetarian for 7 months, right? And your perfectly fine, right? Then what do you have to worry about? There are other ways to get protein, like from nuts, seeds, flaxseed etc. |

If you're dad's concerned about protein, it's a ridiculous notion that we can ONLY get protein from meat. It's plain and simple: not true. There is protein in nuts, bread products, pasta, fake meats, etc. There's protein in almost everything you eat. |

You can supplement your omega 3s with pure algae oil, so that you get the same EPA and DHA omegas, instead of just the ALA omega, like you do with flaxseed oil. |

That's silly. People should make sure to get adequate B12. Although it's really not a huge concern since it's plentiful if you know where to look, and humans store it for a long time. You can go years forgetting to eat it and have no deficiency. I wouldn't recommend trying it though, certainly not more than a few years at a time, to be safe. :P Correlation and causation, people. If anyone can find a source and link me to the entire article, I'd be (somewhat) interested in seeing it. If it actually claimed veganism leads to B12 deficiency, I'm guessing it's not published anywhere reputable. |
