Another Reason Not to Eat Meat

I did not know this until today in my Food and the Law class. It is becoming more common for red meat to be packaged in airtight packages treated with carbon monoxide so that the meat stays a nice red color that consumers like. Unfortunately, you don't know whether or not the meat's spoiled until you open it and smell it. And the treatment can keep unrefrigerated meat red for 2 days, meaning if its not kept at the proper temperature, it could look good but be full of bacteria.

I'm one of the research editors on Drake's Journal of Ag. Law. I'm pulling sources for an article on chicken feed so that the junior staffers can start source checking and citation editing on it next week. Arsenic is a common additive in chicken feed. It is used as an antibiotic among other things, and ends up in the chicken's muscles. In fact, there are federal regulations on how much can legally be in processed, uncooked chicken meat. You know there's a problem when the government feels the need to regulate it.
Scary, scary stuff. Even if you don't care about cows or chickens maybe you should cut back on the meat for your own safety. Not that irradiated spinach is much of an improvement. Can we say "unidentified free radicals?" I think after this class I'm going to want to buy a large plot of land and grow my own food....

Re: Another Reason Not to Eat Meat

Can you say "hydroponic gardening" ?

We started this year growing our own hydroponic veggies, and even though we had a time learning the ropes of nutrient solutions and controlling plant diseases, we got a heckuvalot of veggies which were organic and the most delicious veggies I've ever tasted. Our hydroponic tomato table is still producing even with the outdoor temps dipping into the 40's.

Next year when we move to a new house, there is a large laundry room where I think I'll set up the hydro garden indoors, so no pest and very little disease issues, hopefully. Plus I can do it year round.

Veggies and greens for the humans and pigs, I saw them from seed to fork
