Re: Vegetarians - are we aliens?!

I am not a vegetarian, but I wanted to throw this information out. About "God gave us animals to eat" He didn't at first. All the animals and humans got along perfectly fine. Until sin came (I don't mean to be religious but this is the truth). then we started eating meat and animals started killing each other. So to defend yourselves you can tell those people the truth about God's creation. I like meat, but I agree with vegetarians.

Re: Vegetarians - are we aliens?!

I'm on my way to being a vegetarian.
I've been able to convince my household to go to low meat consumption status.
It is more of an environmental take and an animal treatment take with me.
I've even gotten them to purchase the "cage free" brown eggs instead of the normal ones.
We use less milk, (because it supports the veal industry supposedly,) and if and when they purchase meats, it is usually free range/non-antibiotic now. (I refuse to put money towards meats, and I will not purchase meat for meals even if it is their money.)
Anyways, my vegetarian friends are cheering me on, and my non-vegetarian friends are begging me not to become vegetarian. I don't get it. But because they are friends, instead of getting annoyed with them, I make fun of myself and laugh with them.
My favorite song to play when they make fun of my vegetarian choices is "carrot juice is murder." You know, for the "what about the plants" question, and then I say that plants are renewable.
So basically, instead of getting upset and worked up about defending my lifestyle, I just have a good laugh with them and it relieves the pressure. They tend to be more accommodating and supportive when I visit for food and their are no arguments, just laughs. They also are willing to try new things vegetarian based and keep more open minds.
Sometimes it is all in the way you respond.
If anyone wants to hear it, this is one of my favorite songs, it actually gets me thinking more about the treatment of animals because of how it talks about the treatment of the vegetables.

Re: Vegetarians - are we aliens?!

tazbabie4:: Actually, I have read somewhere [don't ask me where, I have been on SO many sites promoting vegetarianism] that for most of the history of humankind, we have lived on a vegetarian diet.

For most of our history. I wonder why we changed?

*snorts* Can you believe someone on another forum started a thread saying that being a vegetarian is unhealthy because of all the veggies? She said someone at work told her that. You wouldn't believe the laughs it got from everyone.

Re: Vegetarians - are we aliens?!

Yeah, my parents and siblings are always making fun of me, telling me that its stupid to be vegetarian, saying I can't "save the world", etc. Its really annoying.

ugh i hate it when people say that. I always say "yeah? How do you know?". I know nothing of religion (i believe in God though).. so i dont get why people say that..is it written in the bible that animals=food or something?

Re: Vegetarians - are we aliens?!

Family gatherings are usually the most difficult. I am the only vegetarian in my family, so I get plenty of off-hand remarks and jokes made at my expense. Especially on Thanksgiving. It's even more difficult since my husband is not a vegetarian and would probably rather die than go the rest of his life never eating a steak again. While I'm glad he likes most of the vegetarian dinners I prepare, he still gets a craving for steak or (ew) Spam.

I will say this, though; my family and friends can make fun of my vegetarian lifestyle all they want. I'm the one whose been laughing all the way to the scales every other week. Since going veg last August, I've lost 70lbs.

Taboo - I don't know. But animals were here before people...so...was it anticipated we'd come and kill them and destroy the world?

Hmm. I don't think so. So obviously, God can't have made animals for people, because he made them before us.

Not that I believe. But there ya go.
