Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I hope this is the right section. If it isn't Mods feel free to move! Today during Art me and a couple of friends were talking about animal products. My art teacher comes over and asks what we're talking about so i tell her. She asked why we were talking about somthing like that when we ate them. I said that I have been a vegetarian for awhile now. She asked if I had Marshmellows, Gummy Bears, ect. ect. I said no becuase they have Geletin in them. "Have you run out of ideas to annoy people?" She may have meant this as a joke but I was still VERY aggrivated. Then she proceeded to research it. Then she announced to the whole class about me being a vegetarian and talked about all the things I couldn't have like, Advil gel caps ect. ect. This only made me more furious. She finished up her disscussion with, "But, I respect what your doing. I just don't want you to miss out on all these yummy foods!" Sorry I just had to rant. Sorry for my spelling errors, I'm just so mad! |

Wow, that is extremely inappropriate behavior on the part of the teacher! I can't believe she actually announced it to your whole class! It sounds like she has some personal issues with vegetarians, but she certianly shouldn't be working those out in her place of work with the kids she's in charge of teaching. This is something that you could report to the administrators at your school if you feel you've been harrassed (which I believe you have) and would like to take some action about it. I believe she would at least be reprimanded in some way and reminded of the responsibilities her position entails. |

I agree with CosmicTadpole. This is something you should discuss with your school's administration and your parents. As a parent, I would be horrified to find out that one of my children had been spoken to like you were spoken to. I hope everything smoothes out. |

Sounds like a verbal abuse to me. |

To everyone: Well i don't think she meant to but it was very annoying. Another thing is I know her out of school and everything. Although, I don't like it! It wasn't like I was embarressed or ashamed its just I don't want everyone to know and ask me if I'm still one and when do I plan to stop being one. I'm sure we've all been put in these situations though! If she does this again I plan to speak up! |

Can you talk to her after class about it? |

Yea, I would just talk to her about it right now, rather than wait until the next time she brings it up. I feel like you are upset about this situation, and even though she might not have meant it to be "annoying," I feel that you have every right to tell her how uncomfortable you feel about what she did in class. |

That's unfair!!! My English teacher last year was a vegetarian and a result of that we had a debate about being a vegetarian. It was very annoying with one certain person who was in my group (against it.) Big surprise. I don't like anyone to know, apart from my friends, because if people tend to argue a little I get a little angry. So if I were you, I'd just ignore her and try to forget about it. It didn't sound reallyl ike verbal abuse to me, if you want verbal abuse come to my school. To the French department. Now that teacher's scary!! Lol. |

It's so weird to me how people can be "against" it. They are very much the one with the issue. |

Perhaps you can take this as an opportunity to present the other side of the argument; your teacher brought up the issue of all the things you can't have. Now, you need to present to your classmates why it is that you choose to do without all those things, so the last thought they are left with is not one of deprivation. Tell them your side of the story; turn the sitatuation around and make it a positive learning experience. And if your teacher complains, I'd sweetly tell her that *she* is the one that choose to make an issue out of it and that if she does not allow you the time or platform to present your stance, you're perfectly willing to take the issue to the principal, the school board, the newspapers, and to whomever else you need to, in order to let them know that harassment for alternative thinking is alive and well in your school. Maybe you ought to tell her that "yummy" isn't your number one priority. That things like personal ethical responsibility, global viewpoint, health and other such things are more important to you. Perhaps basing food choices on "yummy" are the precise reason the majority of Americans are unhealthy and/or obese?? |

You know, it amazes me when people go crazy over someone being a vegetarian or vegan. I personally must have my meat, but I don't have any problem with anybody being a vegetarian or vegan because its a personal choice. It's not like you being a vegetarian affects anyone else unless you start radically stealing people meat at lunch time or something like that. |

I think people are threatened and somewhat convicted when they meet a vegetarian. It makes them think about what they're doing. People go on the offensive to avoid having to defend their behavior. That's my take on people who attack vegetarians. |

Well, today we were talking about making paper (don't ask why. I wasn't paying attention either) and she said we needed gluten to make it. So she said, "Oh don't worry, I won't ma you touch it." And laughed. I replied " Well, don't worry, I won't be doing that project." She pretended like she didn't here but I think she did! And trust me, there was much more I wanted to say to her! I just can't get over her just plain rudeness! |

Gluten is plant based so I don't really understand the whole interaction. ??? |

Actually, most gluten is made from either horse hoof, or pig hoof. It has materials in the hoof needed to make things "Gummy". ALthough, I have heard of some things being made from plant gluten but more commonly its made from hoof. |

Gluten is derived from grasses, barley, rye etc. Definately NOT made from horse hooves. Are you thinking of GELATIN? |

Gluten is not animal based. It is made from the protein of the grain. |
